my new vet's not impressed

Bunnytod

Mama Doe
Took Honey and Harley to our new vet's just really to meet them and get them a quick check up, Well she said i should not be feeding them pellets and should just feed them veg and a bit off hay, I should really feed them brocli and female bunnys shouldnt really be neutered as its too dangerous, she looked at me in horror when i said they had both been done. Dont think i will be going back there they charged me £38 for that usless info for less than five minuites.

Geezo, with vets like that, what hope do bunnies have :(. At least you knew that was a load of twaddle, hope you manage to find a better vet soon.

I just gotta look for a new vet there the closest one i could find, I miss my old vet, I was a bit worried about them when i rang up asking if they were bunny savy vets and being told oh yeah there just normal vets and will know everything, At my old vets they had a lady dedicated to looking at bunnys.

thats terrible. If your not good at complaining by phone i would write them a letter telling them all the resons why you won't use them again. For other rabbits sake they need telling!

 good job you know what your buns need!

ring the rwa for advice on a vet in your area (i rang them when i needed a good vet for eric) - you could also mention to them the 'advice' you have been given;)

yes definatly write a plite letter,
say somthign like,

dear practise owner,
I am writing to let you know about a recent visitI had to your vets, i was concerened about teh lack of basic rabbit knowledge the vet__ms vet____ i saw had. she informed me that my rabbits should not be fed pellets and only a small amount of hay but surely with rabbits needing 85% of their diet to be hay due to the fibre which keeps their guts and teeth in good order this is wrong the pellets i feed are over 18%fibre and are only given in small quantitys and i feed hay unlimited, the vet also suggested that i feed them more veg such as broccoli now i know variety of veg is good for vitamins and yes mine do enjoy a tiny peice of broccoli now and again but it does have the obvious side affect of gassey build up in some buns which im sure you know can lead to bloat or stasis (very dangerous for bunnies)
i was also suprised by the horror and disgust that i have had my female rabbits spayed i dont understand this is now normally considered a must if not being bred from as 85% of females unspayed over age 3years get uternine cancer and die as its usually too late once it has spread to other organs by time signs are noticed, and as for the anestetic risks while i apprichiate for any small animal it is slightly higher than for dogs and cats with the right care before and after(including allowing them to eat right up until the op, using Isoflurane the roccomended anestetic for rabbits, pain relief before and after surgery , preventative antibiotics and of course continued pain relief and after care this really should not be a risky operation.
I do understand rabbits are classed as exotics but i have to say i am now looking else where for a good rabbit savvy vet as i know it will make the difference if a life or death situation occours with my rabbits, but i firstly wanted to highlight the lack of knowledge of your vet and explain wh yi will not be returning to your practise as it may be costly to other rabbits within their care,
kindest regards

I would also drop by with a few RWAF leaflets, so that they can avoid giving the same poor advice to others who may not be as experienced in bunny care as you.

Good Lord. Can you report them? Some people might actually take that advice!

I think thats a great letter and with the support of some leaflets let them know exactly whats needed. how frustrating to pay good money for such bad advice, I would certainly add that you would like a refund on that.

Spelin mustaks? Wjat spulung masticks :lol::lol:

lol yes it was typed very quickly as a rant letter!!!! i jsut thought how disgusting it was that a vet would give out such inaccurate information but i know it happens more often than it should!!! and for goodness sake if you use that as a starting base of your letter please ammend the spelling mistakes for me!! and any gramatical errors!

If you want any help with the letter, let me know. I love complaining! As a solicitor I get to do it a lot.

I would certainly demand your money back. Why would you pay them for in effect, nothing. A consultation where you were given no useful information.

Thats a great letter will be going in the post, Will let you know of the response, (i have corrected mistakes lol) I am still shocked by it, gotto book in at the next village for another vets.

It really is disgusting that they can claim to be experts yet freely dish out such garbage advice. Can't say I'm surprised though in my experience.

I've had the same conversations with receptionists - asking them if they are rabbit savvy 'oh yes, of course, we specialise in all pets.' Yeah right. Then when I get there and here what they have to say it makes me angry.

oh dear that's awful

our vets seem to know there stuff, but if it has been anything that needs further investigatingm have always helped me see a bunny vet specialised in that area, like mowgli when his eyesight first went

though our vet tends to listen to what i say it is , as i get alot of advice from here and past knowledge

I dont mind having to pay extra to see a bunny savy vet, The last vets i went to were double the price in there area but it was worth it cause they knew what they were doing and i couldnt fault a thing that they said, Just a shame that there over a hour drive away from me.
