View Full Version : How often do you give fresh hay?

Just wondered really as Timmy and Blossom only seem to eat like troopers when it is strong smelling fresh hay. We give them some everyday but should we be giving fresh stuff at the same time we give them their other food and water (2/3 times a day)??

What does everyone else do?

I give mine some morning and evening, as they definitely tuck in more when it's 'fresh'.

I change my bunnies hay every day. They only eat the long stalky bits and will only eat it when it is fresh so I throw away the old stuff and give them new every morning.

I give Cassie and Oakley, who are indoors, fresh in the evening and top up in the morning when I am cleaning their litter trays. They get very excited when they have it and jump on it before I can get it in their crate most of the time

For the foster bun, who is outside, the same as the my indoor pair - they all get treated the same!

Love to seem them get tucked into the hay as it is good for them

4 times a day

 How on earth do you ever manage to go to work, or to the shops? With the amount of bunnies you have it'd be like painting the Forth Bridge, you'd have to start again straight away as soon as you finished!

I manage to top mine up in the morning with breakfast, and in the evening when I clean them out.

We do ours 2/3 times a day :) They get fresh hay in their litter trays of a morning. Come 4/5pm they get their hay racks filled with 'nice' hay then when i go to do the bedtime rounds if they look like they need more hay i add more :) xXx

Much the same as Becky - 3 times a day, with breakfast, tea and before 'tuck-in' time at night. There is never any left to throw away although they do waste quite a bit pulling it out of the hay rack and then weeing over it

Mine get fresh hay three times a day. First thing in the morning before breakfast to encourage hay eating, some more at about 6pm which has Dandelion Delight or some other dried herb stuff mixed in. And then again at bed time :)

Ours get topped up about 3 times a day. They waste quite a lot as they go to the toilet on it (it is the litter tray after all!) but they eat loads too and you can set your watch by the size / quality / quantity of the poos they do :lol::lol:

Deej must get his done about 3 or 4 times a day. As he's an indoor bun and he loves his hay, we just do it whenever we pass by and see that he could do with another handful.

I guess though it must partly depend on the size of the hay racks or portions you put in! :D

I give fresh hay daily but they always seem to prefer the stuff i've just tipped out of their litter trays into a binbag......

2/3 times a day.. I fill the hay rack up when I get up in the morning then just top it up as Phillip empties it.. some does gt wasted in his littertray too as the hay rack is above it

me too. they have 'fancy' hays (anything not simple meadow, i tend to mix up fancies for extra fun, and throw in any treat hays or dried dandelion) in their hay basket, but they also have meadow hay to snuggle in and some more to reach for. they never finish their hay but they do eat a lot!

The litter trays get changed and filled with clean hay before bed, they get topped up in the morning and then get topped up again when I get in from work at 6.30ish

2 to three times a day. They've just had a top up and it will be gone soon as its their favourite orchard grass.

Three or four times a day, and they get three of four different types of hay to keep them interested.

My netherland dwarf, Mimi, doesn't like hay all that much. She eats it, but
not nearly as much as Nemesis, my male Holland lop.

Mimi gets a rather large amount in the morning, and we give her fresh
stuff the next morning.

Nemesis gets hay every morning and every night. Boy knows how to pack
down some food.. >.>

I add fresh hay 3 or 4 times a day. They always have lots of hay available but it seems to taste nicer when it's just been put down.

But, oddly, they seem to go mad for the stuff that's in the dirty litter tray from the day before if they get to it before I empty it too. :?:?

Twice a day minimum, morning and evening, 3x at the weekend! They have a huge hay basket with two different types of farm hay at either end. They also have a large bowl that has 3 different types of 'posh' hays which also gets filled up twice a day. If they are particularly nomming a lot I always add more! I also occasionally sprinkle dandelion delight on top :D

They have a couple of big handfuls in the morning after pellets and the same again just before I go to bed.If their hay rack is empty in between then I fill it.:)
