  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Excess moulting fur - possible soultion??

Have any of you heard this before, I've just found this on Google:

Meat Tenderizer - Yes, that's right! Put 1/4 teaspoon of plain meat tenderizer (found in any grocery store) in your bunnies drinking water every day when he is shedding his coat. The Bromelain (papaya enzyme) in the tenderizer will dissolve the gooey substance that bonds ingested hair safely and quickly. Much more effective than Papaya tablets.

One of my buns goes through a terrible moult and I was wondering if this would help as he refuses to eat the pinapple tablets

Hmmm...tricky. I can see the logic as bromelaine does break down hair, but in the one I've just looked at, 2 of the top 3 ingredients are salt and sugar with the bromelaine 4th on the list...I would be worried that the other ingredients would do more harm than good.

Does your bunny tolerate brushing? Personally I would go for regular brushing to remove excess hair and a high fibre diet with lots of fresh water (and watery veg) to keep the gut working properly - that way the risk of fur getting gunked up in the system is lowered to start off with.

just get bromelaine tablets from any health food shop. No sugar or salt or other nasties....that and as santa says regular grooming and a high fibre diet + plenty of fresh water
