  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I have two girl rabbits, sisters who will both be spayed once old enough.
However I just wondered do they need jabs or anything like my dog? they are kept indoors all the time so do they need flea treatment? there is no way they could catch them from my dog as she is well protected to?!?!

Please help a new owner lol!

Yes they will both need a Myximatosis Vaccine every 6 months and a VHD vaccine every 12 months. Even though they are indoors they are still at risk from myximatosis as the ticks can be carried by cats and dogs. You don't need any flea treatment unless your rabbits get mites, so you should check their fur for signs of mites or other creepy crawlies every day. They can also get something called Flystrike which is horrible, it's important to make sure they are keeping clean, particularly around their bums, if any poo is getting stuck it's important to clean it off. Flystrike is when flies lay their eggs in the rabbits fur, the eggs hatch into larvea and maggots and this can kill the rabbit, so it's important to check their fur every day for any intruders or specs that could be eggs. There is also a worming product called Panacur that should be used 2-4 times a year to prevent any problems caued by a disease called EC that affects a lot of rabbits.

They will need to be vaccinated against:

Myxi EVERY 6 MONTHS
VHD YEARLY

They may well need protecting against FLYSTRIKE which is a very horrible disease, it can be transfered via biting insects and other buns- This can be done either at the vets or at home using a product called REAR GUARD (Can be posionous to other animals if ingested) Best done other the summer months.

It would also be advisable to protect against Encephalitozoon Cuniculi which is a nasty parasite- This can be done via a paste called PANACURE, use daily for 9 days at least twice a year.
