  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Deaf bunny

I think Rum might be deaf :(

She never responds to sounds, such as food bag/dish or the doors being opened or closed etc. Raisin runs like a mad bunbun whenever he hears food or the sound of chopping. She also gets startled really easily by something visual and will run and hide and stomp if suprised visual despite there being sounds (footsteps) leading up to me appearing round the corner.

Don't know how to check/test conclusively though...

I have a deaf lop, try clapping your hands loudly behind Rum and see what her response is, if she doesn't react she could be deaf.
If you are still unsure I would take her to your vet's and get her checked out.

have spent most of the day doing little tests and noises, pretty sure she's a deaf bunbun :(

I suppose it doesn't make much difference to her, she just gets a bit more freaked out by sudden visuals.

My deaf Bun 'Pud' startles sometimes when we walk into the room, but he is a happy and content bunny and you wouldn't know he's deaf.

Rum and Raisin are gorgeous buns :love:

:cry:Hope Rum is ok, if she is deaf, I think it's managable just making sure she sees you etc so you don't startle her.

I would suggest still taking her to the vets for a health cheak just incase it is an underlying health problem causing the deafness.
