He took ages to come round, the vet thought that was it :( the op was a last ditch attempt... but the vet just phoned and said she was amazed that he made it... he even nibbled on some food last night. Ive been told he is still critical and she doesnt want to build my hopes up because he's had majour surgery. I'm dreading the bill for all this ... I'm skint..out comes the credit card. :(

Happy Hopping
07-01-2010, 07:53 AM
I need to pt. out the next 48 hr. is critical, due to post surgery complication. That's how my bridge bun Goofball passed away. Get his diet going w/ whatever bunny treats he likes to keep his strength up. Keep him indoor and keep him very warm

1 other thing, assuming he get thru this and stabilize. If you improve his diet, you can greatly reduce his other health problems. To that end, switch to Oxbow Basic T.

Do Week 1, 70% old pellet, 30% new Oxbow Basic T pellet
week 2, 50% ea.
week 3, 70% new Oxbow Basic T, 30% old.
Week 4, 100% oxbow.

Oxbow will improve his diet and encourage him to eat more hays as well. You'll also notice a bigger bunny poo size from Jazzy. And you'll end up savnig a lot more $$ on vet bill. I know that because I see all these improvement on Bernie & Minnie since I switch over

I had to make the same choice 4 years ago with my dwarf lop when he was six. He had to have surgery as a last resort to remove a fur block from his stomach. I saw him the day after surgery and did not think he would make it, he really looked in terrible pain although on opiates. However, make it he did and lived to 9 years old. The recuperation took two weeks of syringe feeding and lots of TLC from his bonded girl. The only negative was he could not get back to his pre-op weight.

I am really hoping Jazz is able to recover as well as my Liam.

I fully endorse the Oxbow pellet plan in Happy Hopping's post, it did wonders for my buns.

I don't know about this Oxbow pellet, and perhaps other members don't either. Our vet suggested we swap to Burgess Excel early on in our rabbiting career to stop Marble selecting only the choice bits from her rabbit mix. Is Oxbow better? What's better about it? Where can we get it?

My Willow made it through an operation for a gut obstruction but I know it is such a tricky op. that some people don't have it done at all. So its really good he made it through. After the op Willow poo'd a poo that was as big as a duck egg almost all in one huge mass!!

How many rabbits do you have? (Please excuse my ignorance!) Only a small bag lasts for quite a long time. My two guinea pigs still have a good quantity of Oxbow pellets left after three months as a 4.5kg bag lasts ages - (I'd say they eat the same amount as an average sized rabbit as they're large boar guinea pigs) the pellets are very small unlike SS or Burgess so there's more in a 4.5kg bag of Oxbow than you'd think - not sure that makes sense! If you have a few buns' though I can imagine it may work out more expensive though. The biggest bag I've seen is the 4.5kg one. :?

I really hope Jazzy continues to fight and recovers ok. xx

I'm so sorry, I was worried about Jazzy because you said Jazz takes so long to come around. Does Jazzy has a companion currently? If so, let her smell Jazzy's body for 1/2 hr. so that she knows he has passed away.

On a sidenote, £450 is actually an average amt. for an average surgery. I have had to pay more for my buns and immediately or 2 days after, my bun still passed away.

I didnít see this thread until this lunchtime :( Iím so sorry heís gone, you did your best for him and thatís the best thing we can do for our bunnies.

Bloat strikes a particular chord with me, I lost Luna nearly a year ago from the same thing. Sometimes what is meant to be will be, no matter how hard you try to save them  but you fought as hard as you could and he will be grateful to you for fighting with him and giving him every possible chance *hugs*

:cry::cry::cry:

I nearly lost my Boris a few days ago  But he pulled through and is now recovering. I can, however, imagine how I would have been feeling by now if he hadn't made it  Which is why I'm not letting anyone tell me "it's just a rabbit" ever again. Dealing with the loss of a loved one is always tough. Why do people assume that you can't love a rabbit as much as you'd love a cat,a dog,or a person?

My thoughts are with you and little Gizmo x Seeing that picture of Jazzy from yesterday made me cry. He really was a beautiful boy.

aww hunny i know how u feel.my pepper was like a dog,if we stood at the backdoor and called his name he would come running up the path to us,if he was up in our room he would jump on the bed, find your hand and put his head under it,lay down and wait for head rubs,he was so friendly its unreal.im devastated.
