  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Help - eye problem

Alpha Buck
Arwen has blocked eye ducts caused by her teeth (has had x-ray). She has had the ducts cleared twice but it doesn't last for long. I inject depocillin twice a week and clean her eyes at the same time.
Yesterday evening one of her eyes was closed and gunked up. I phoned emergency vet and discussed bringing him down but since he wasn't an exotic vet or specialist in eyes (the surgery has both) and was only suggesting fulc...acid I didn't take her down. I bathed ehr eyes in warm salt water til it opened - it does not appear to have anything in it or be damaged. I also gave her metacam in case of pain. Anyone had this with bunnies who have eye duct problesm? What should I do next? The vet I most trust is off til next week and I'm not sure that any other vet could make a differnece anyway. She's on depocillin and metacam already. She was opening her bad eye this morning a bit but it didn't look very good. Advice?

Unfortunately it sounds as though an abscess may be forming in the nasolacrimal duct. This can happen in spite of ongoing abx therapy.
Personally I would not want to wat til next week to have her examined by a Vet.

Aswell as Depocillin adding Metronidazole to her treatment may be of benefit, but again this needs to be decided after a thorough examination. Also there are other abx eye drops that a Vet could prescribe.

I think Hugo's There's rabbit Eddie had this problem. I think he was with either Santa or Starlight's at the time.

I'll try to find a thread for you to see how it was treated.

I'll make an appointment with their eye vet - I wondered about something more serious but couldn't think what it could be - it all happened so quickly!

Is Arwen the Orange Cashie (sorry ) if so she could well be related to Eddie, he has tooth root problems :(

Do you use Wylie's?

No, this is another unrelated bun. I do use Wylie's. Unfortunately WIlliam is away this week but I have dealt witht their eye specialist before and I know he's good. Have appointment tomorrow with him (snow permitting) - is this likely to be soon enough or is this a medical emergency?
Arwen seems fine in herself - eating and jumping around as usual

I don't know sorry :? I think I would prefer to see the eye specialist tomorrow but maybe phone and speak to another vet and explain the situation, they may say it's ok to wait or suggest you bring her in? William has only just got back from holidays...I hope I have no bunny emergencies this week
