:( Another broken leg...

xEmily

Mama Doe
Just been to the vets this morning to find out that Polly has broken her leg. If anyone remembers me saying that Doogie broke her leg in the summer, and eventually had to be put down because it didn't heal, well Polly has the EXACT same injury, same leg, the same part of the bone... I'm gutted.

The vet is reluctant to do the same surgery again as it didn't work last time, so we are waiting to hear from him on Monday after he has rung a specialist. Meanwhile, poor Polly is just hunched up in the corner looking very sorry for herself, Oscar is just licking her.

It seems such a weird coincidence that the exact same thing has happened, the vet was very surpised as he said the injury is uncommon anyway. Guess we just have to wait and see what happens. :(

Don't have a clue really. She was out in the garden and we noticed she had come back into her hutch and was just sitting there huddled up, so we knew something was wrong, then saw she was limping.

No pain relief, I was thinking about that, should the vet have given her some, or should we have asked for it? I feel really bad that we didn't mention it at the vets. Is there anyway of getting some now? Because the vets is closed now until Monday I think.

Imagine if you had a broken leg and no pain relief :shock::shock:

My vets is open today as I have just come back from getting two myxi jabs... hope you can get something sorted today for your poorly bunny.

Outrageous

I despair at times I really do.

I hope you manage to obtain some but really you should not have to ask for it

Sending vibes for your poor Bun xx

Sorry to hear about bun. If it comes to it, you could suggest amputation as a last resort.
I would definitely try to get some pain relief for her though.

I'd call your emergency vet if you can't get hold of your own. Your rabbit needs pain relief ASAP .

Also, is your vet very rabbit savvy? If not, it is probably worth trying to find one that is or at least a small animal specialist.

Lots of vibes

The vets is closed, I think the emergency surgery is open at this time, but I can't get through to reception. I can't get hold of my parents either who have taken the car.

If you call your normal Vet's number there should be a recorded message advising of contact details for out of hours cover.

Are you in Leicester at the moment ?
if so ring me and I'll see if I can help with pain relief..to point out a vet is best but I do have some metacam if you can't get to a vet

Emily I hope you can contact Jill but please do also at least speak with a Vet before administering any Metacam. Metacam is a prescription medication and can only be administered on the say-so of a Vet.

I dont mean to be 'funny' Jill. But there are some folk who read this Forum and like to cause trouble and I'd hate for you to be accused of handing out a POM that was not even prescribed for that specific Rabbit.

don't worry Jane I would have spoken to my own vet/buns vet first..no one should just hand out meds however experienced they are

Don't despair - broken legs CAN be fixed. Parsnip's broken elbow took a little longer to mend because of his age but he's as right as ninepence now. Just make sure you get referred to an orthopaedic surgeon. My bunny savvy vet was prepared to 'give it a go' but he admitted to me that bunny bones are very brittle. He was of the opinion that it was more important for Parsnip to see a bone specialist than a bunny specialist.

Keeping everything crossed for your little one and sending lots of healing ((((vibes)))).

Poor thing :( I would look for another vet. I can't believe they didn't give her any medication whatsoever!! That's disgraceful!

Parsley had a triple break of two (hind) leg bones last year. It was an awful break and his leg was pointing backwards and upside down.

He had a long operation and had it plated and pinned. Several months later the plates have been removed and he is perfect now.

Failing that amputation is possible and bunnies cope well with only 3 legs.

Try to find a good vet - or get a referral to one of the specialist vets.

PS we went to a specialist in bone repairs for cats as our own rabbit surgeon/vet was on holiday - but she could probably have done it.

Thanks for the comments, and for the vibes.

I got hold of the emergency vets, had a long chat with someone, and was told that different vets have different protocols for administering pain relief, and they said that they didn't want to give any pain relief without speaking to my vet first, unless the rabbit was in obvious distress. I talked through the behaviour with them, they said to wait until Sunday and see how she was, and to bring her in if I felt she needed to see a vet.

On Sunday Polly seemed ok, she was hopping around, being inquisitive and still scoffing her food, so we decided that rather than stress her out taking her to the vets, that we would just keep an eye on her. I hope we did the right thing :(

I am now waiting for the vet to ring, after he has spoken to an orthopaedic specialist, he did say that he was reluctant to do the op again as the bones are so brittle. I'm just praying that the orthopaedic prices aren't sky high!

Polly seems fine this morning still, still eating etc normally.

For those in Leicester, who would you consider a bunny-savvy vet? We are at Bell Brown and Bentley surgery, have always been happy with the vet before, so have just taken his word on things.

Thankyou Jill for your very kind offer :)

Sending vibes for Polly. It's sounds very positive that she's eating ok and moving around.

I'm shocked about the lack of pain relief ... I hope you can find a bunny savvy vet soon for her :(
