  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

coccidiosis

Just_Kazzy

Young Bun
Just back from the vet and my bun Rosie, my vet thinks she may have coccidiosis, we have sent her poo away to be tested but with the new year holiday it will take ages to come back so have started treatment for coccidious. She is roughly 9months old,has not been spayed yet (booked for jan), over the past week and a bit she has lost quite a bit of weight she weighs 1kg (she's a mini lop). She has been really quite for the past few days, sitting hunched up, not intrested in things. She is still eating and is passing poos and weeing, although her poos are quite big and not normal coloured more black than normal. My vet could also feel a slighlty impacted cecum (sp??). She was given pain relief.

Does anyone have any experince with coccidious?

Thanks Karen

yeah I have 3 others, although Rosie only lives with her sister and has no contact with the other two. Daisy's poo is being tested too although we are not starting treatment on her just now as she shows no symptoms just now.

Thank you

OK, coccidiosis is highly contageous so I would strongly advise you to exercise extreme hygeine/barrier nursing.

A steam cleaner is the best thing to use for their environment. The only disinfectant that appears to kill coccidia is Jeyes Fluid which is highly toxic if ingested. It also stinks. Steam will kill coccidia and it is 'Rabbit environment friendly'

thank you so much,

I have a steam cleaner so will steam clean there hutch, and will take extreme care not to put the other two at risk of this.

thanks
