Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rough Heel

Maddy-Hazel

Warren Scout
Hey there, Maddy here. Some might remeber me from my post about Hazel not liking being handled. Well he's doing great now, and I managed to actually get him flipped over so I could make sure he's a boy, and get stuff un-stuck from his butt. When I was looking at he back paws, I noticed a bit of the heel of his one of his feet has the skin exposed. It doesn't look irritated, and the skin is intact. I'm guessing it's because he was being kept in a wire bottom cage by the place I got him from.
What I want to know, is if there's anything I should look out for, or anything I can do for his little feeties.

Poor boy. It will have been from the wire cage. From what you say the skin is exposed, but the skin hasn't broken or scabbed over yet....which is good.

Prevention is the way to go. But down lots of soft bedding in his area. Vet bed is good (and easily machine washable.) Carpet is bad, so wherever he rests make sure there is lots of soft blankets...enough for his feet to squoosh into the bedding.

If they do break then I know people who use finger bandages (easily bought from Boots) and some sudocream. If the skin does break badly then he'll have to go to the vet...as he could get an infection.

Glad he's better to handle!
