Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Question about F10 in a nebuliser

I have been using F10 in a nebulizer for abotu a week now. The concentration reccommended is supposedly 1:250 so I have created a solution of 0.1ml of F10 antiseptic solution and 25mls saline solution. I then take 5mls of this solution and add it to the nebulizer.

Now my questions are:

Does this solution seem adequate for the treatment of respiratory infections. FHB uses F10, however she wasn't very forthcoming with information about quantities to use in a nebuliser when my vet contacted her.

I am not entirely sure that the anticeptic solution is what most vets prescribe for usage in a nebulizer. I know that the antiseptic solution is for use in a nebulizer... however when i trawl the internet, people seem to be using the disinfectant stuff which isn't specifically designed to be nebulized.

Also... I seem to be using a great deal of saline solution every time I create the solution. Is saline the best liquid to be mixing with the F10?

When I create the 'solution' do I throw it away or can I reuse it. I am not using the whole 26mls produced each nebulization you see.

Thanks in advance. I hope some of you can answer my questions.

I have been. I am waiting for a reply from her. I guess she is very busy looking after poorly buns.

Thanks though.

 Sorry, I did get your pm but got waylaid and completely forgot

It's tricky isn't it because it's such a small amount of F10. I made up 100ml (saline from the vets) with 0.5ml of F10 because I felt more confident of accurately measuring out that much F10 whereas I wasn't really with 0.1ml. It keeps for 6 months when it's made up so it's fine to just keep it for next time, even 100ml goes down quite quickly!

I probably use about 5ml per time as well - the determining factor is really how long you've been told to do it for though, as it nebulises at whatever rate it's going to nebulise and you just need to make sure there's enough liquid in the chamber to last for that time period. I've been told to do it for 15-20 minutes at a time, so that its anti-fungal properties 'kick in' after 15 minutes contact, and about 5ml of solution seems to last that long with a little left over in the nebuliser that I just pour away.

I was told to use F10SC which is also what one of F10's earlier factsheets says: http://www.f10biocare.co.uk/F10factsissue6.pdf Maybe the antiseptic is a newer product that they are starting to use instead? Is there any product/concentration information on the label?

I have asked on here before why saline should be used for nebulising - whether it's something fancy to do with osmosis and it helping the drugs to work, or whether it's just a convenient sterile solution, or something else. I've been using that because I've been told to, but if anyone knows the answer to 'why saline', I'd be interested to hear it :)

Hope that helps a bit :)
