  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Claws

Hiya, ive got three buns and have tried to do as much research as possible to make sure they are happy and comfortable, but one thing I havent done is have the vet look at their claws. Do they need trimming and how often, they are house buns so they dont go out digging x

Thanks your help would be much appreaciated x

They will need trimming every so often, especially as they don't have anything to wear them down on. I trim Alfie and Bubbles's claws every few mths (they're outdoor buns) - usually just the front feet as the claws on the back feet seem to wear down on concrete - so indoor buns would need trimming more often I guess.

If the claws are light, it's usually very easy to tell if they need trimming as you will be able to see the quick. It might be a good idea to ask the vet to show you how much to trim them and then do it yourself at home. :)

I'm so pleased to see this question. :D
Bunny foot care is incredibly important.
My bun is a house bun - free ranging. I check his nails every month. I use the clippers used for bird claws.
I also advise you ask your vet / vet nurse to show you where to cut, & the correct "shaping" of the nails for the foot.
If your bun has dark nails, it's worth having the 1st. aid treatment in case you cut into the "quick" at home.
If you are very new to bunnies, they have a "dew claw" (used for grooming) on the inside of the front legs to check too!

Thanks for your help everyone I will get on to that straight away ,there is always something!
