My bunny going for Op tomorrow: Update post 12 - On Meds!

AilsaDS

Warren Scout
I know it's only neutering & it's a simple procedure but Phillip's my new bunny (& my 1st - I've been a bunny mommy for 4 days) & I'm sooo nervous.

I'm going to ask the vet to do a full checkup before he gives him anaesthetic to make sure he's fit enough & I'm also taking in his medical file so the vet knows his history & can keep a close eye on him.
His sneezing's stopped & he's eating and drinking well, but he's leaving a lot of caecotrophs so I'll mention that too.

I'm even taking in some of his dry food, the vets must think I'm barmy LOL

& I'm soo bad it's 1.30am & I should be asleep cos I'm up early to take Phillip to the vets - but I can't sleep :?

Im up early to go to the vets too :?

I felt sick with fear all day when my James was being neutered (he's my super special bun ).. i've had many buns neutered, all but one went smoothly.

Im sure your bun will be ok

I think my kittens know I'm anxious, one of them is leaning up against my chest, headbutting & cheek rubbing my face & purring madly - he's such a sweetie

I'm hiding upstairs away from bunny atm so he won't feel my anxiousness, & he's asleep, I don't want to disturb him

Thanks Lillian for your support, I really appreciate it.
I'm so glad I joined this forum, everyone has been so helpful & supportive and very welcoming.

Animals always know. My dog Boo spent the entire day nudging me and demanding attention when i was anxiously waiting to hear if James was ok :D

I can believe it :)

I have a very special bond with Finlay because it took me (& him) a lot longer to bond than his brother. He was also very play aggressive, biting & scratching me whenever I stroked him (he gets over-stimulated very quickly).
Finlay is actually the confident one but he lets me calm him now & i think he sees me as his mommy

i hope in time ill be able to build a bond like this with Phillip too, with a lot of love and patience.

Thanks everyone

I got a call from the vet to let me know he's doing really well, he came round from the anaesthetic & there were no problems & I can pick him up soon

I also found out my vets has a bunny nurse, she loves bunnies & specialises in them.. & she runs a free bunny clinic once a week too for bunny advice (Jumps)

Oo & I found out I wasn't holding him properly (bad mommy ) n that was why he was kicking.. but now I know how to hold him securely we'll both be a lot happier :)

Lots of vibes for tomorrow, its natural to worry. Dont worry, your not barmy, i always give my buns a packed lunch for going to the vets too ;).

He's all done & @ home eating his dried grass

I found out when I collected him that they did the neuter under local anaesthetic so it's been less strain & his recovery has been a lot faster.
I'm still watching him though, of course.

He's still not eating his caecotrophs but the bunny nurse I spoke to this morning said I need to change his dried food to pellets once he's recovered from the op cos he's not eating enough fibre.
I've got a consultation with her after xmas to discuss it so we can work together to give him the best diet for his health.

& I was right, the nurses all fell in love with him @ the vets
He's a big softie

I took Phillip for a follow-up appt this morning & his testes are swollen although his wounds appear to be healing ok.
The nurse called in the vet & he administered Baytril & Metacam as a precaution against possible infection.
Otherwise Phillip is eating, drinking, pooing & weeing normally, apart from not eating his caecotrophs, & he his playful & bossy.

I'm sure it's nothing to worry about anyway, but he will be back @ the vets on Tue, or earlier if I'm at all concerned that he's getting worse or not healing.

Poor baby

Thanks Snowbery, I really hope so as he seems very uncomfortable. When he's sitting he's got one back leg stretched right out in front of him, as if he's trying to relieve the pressure, although he's not grinding his teeth..

He really scared me last night though; he was laid in his litter tray with his chin on the lip of the tray, his neck stretched out & his mouth open :?
Do rabbits do this sometimes? I was really worried thinking he was mouth breathing, so I called to him & offered some food.. he moved & closed his mouth, his nose was twitching & he took the food from me to eat.
Afterwards he didn't have his mouth open again, but if he's gonna do that a lot I swear he'll give me a heart attack or something

Poor thing fought against me this morning when I was checking he was healing, I hardly touched him at all, just checked his swelling wasn't getting any worse & his woulds weren't pussy or anything, buth e has soo much fur I have to try & move it out of the way to see properly.
I think I hurt him because he squealed, but I was trying soo hard to be careful & not distress him, poor baby

Then he didn't wanna take his Metacam, I had to hold him tight whilst my son gave him it - when I put Phillip down (he was on my knee) he jumped off me & nipped my arm through my jacket. I guessed he was cross @ me & I felt soo bad for hurting him.

I decided not to give him his Baytril @ the same time as he was obviously stressed as he was breathing very fast, he went back in his cage & I left him to settle on his own.
So later I tried Baytril in pineapple juice.. he wouldn't drink it.
S I tried to give him water & grass, he wouldn't eat or drink!
Gave him a bit of carrot (his favourite) & he sniffed it & ignored it.
I was feeling awful by this time (& worried) :?
He was sat with one of his back legs stretched right out in front of him.

After an hour or so he started moving around & had some water & hay, then nibbled on the carrot, but still wouldn't have the pineapple juice.. so I removed it & instead mixed baytril with some mashed carrot.. & he STILL wouldn't take it.

In the end I had to inject it into his mouth this evening; fully expecting him to fight against me & get really cross; but he just sat there & lapped it up.
contrary bunny
Then he was chinning me for the 1st time, butting his head against my arm & my knee, was soo cute

& after that scare he's eating & drinking fine now, although he still looks very uncomfortable.
I can tell he's not happy in himself as he's not binkying & hardly 'flopping' & I feel sooo sad for him, he must be in some pain as his testes are still as swollen as yesterday.
Vet thought he could be having a reaction to the sutures rather than an actual infection so the Baytril is precautionary.

Anyway I'm not gonna check him @ the same time as giving meds now, I think I'll do Metacam in the morning..
Then a little later check his wounds (once pain meds have kicked in)
Then later in the day give him Baytril

Fingers crossed it works like this ;)
I want to cause him as little discomfort or pain as possible, poor thing.
