Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Badger's Breathing. Help me please

Sky-O

Wise Old Thumper
It's 1.40am.

I've got a problem with Badger and I'm terrified and don't know if this warrants an emergency vet, or even what I should do until then.

Three weeks ago (well, three weeks on Thursday) Badger had a dental. He had it because every so often, when he was asleep, he would make a funny, squelchy, gaggy noise from his mouth. It was very occassional, maybe once every 24 hours.

He has been fine since.

I spent from 4pm to 11.30pm with him continunously and do this everyday (he's bonding with Rosie), and he has been fine today.

Since going to bed, in my room he's done that funny noise four times and when I was watching him he had his nose in the air as far as it could go, was breathing super quick, and at one point even looked like mouth breathing, then he would do that noise and settle a bit more.

I've brought him out of my room and given him some food in case he as something caught (and he has eaten stuff). I have checked his gums and they look pink. He's very alert and lively and running around.

What on EARTH do I do? Does this warrant an emergency vet? Given it's the middle of the night and that he seems ok when awake.

I'm so, so scared I'm going to lose him.

If he seems fine in himself, I would say just stay with him, make sure he's eating/drinking/pooing etc. If he seems panicky within himself, or you really think he's at risk, phone the vet, but if he's an easily stressed bun, you might just be making things worse
Offer him treats, etc to make sure he keeps eating and gt him to the vets asap in the morning.
Sorry I'm not much use, but I know what it's like when they're ill, the panic is awful
good luck xx

Thank you very much for replying :) You were more use than you think because you brought me back from my panic into rational thought, so thank you.

I'm going to stay with him in the living room (normally he lives in my bedroom) because its warmer in here and I wonder if that is making a difference. In the hour I have up with him he has not coughed once or shown problems other than fast breathing, but no mouth breathing, no tilting his head backwards to get air, or anything. He is being his usual picklish self really.

I have 'steamed' him in my bathroom because I thought it wouldn't hurt.

Thankfully he's not a stressy bun, he's my cuddly lump. So that makes it easier in the sense that I can get any tests or anything done on him that I need to because he will cope fine with it.

I can't believe this, I just can't believe it. I lost Tilly on Saturday to something breathing related (looks like for her it was secondary cancer, but we don't really know because we didn't get a post mortem done or anything).
