Our new rex girl keeps bumping in to things and is shocked by sudden noises ect, we have noticed that her eyes have a blue film over them and are cloudy, We took her to the vets and he said she has cataracts, she is only 10 weeks (this is what we were told) how common is this and has any one had experence with cataracts in such a younge bunny,

Hi,

Ive only ever had it in old bunnies, my vet said that it is possible to operate but he had only done it once. With my old bunnies I decided to leave it be.

I think he said something about removing lens etc but that's all I can remember it was a few years ago.

I strongly suspect they may be EC induced cataracts

EC can be transmitted from the Doe to her Kits and the consequences can be that the EC spores cause the lenses of the Kits eyes to rupture resulting in cataracts and blindness.

I would advise you to discuss this possibility with your Vet and also to treat the Rabbit and all in contact Rabbits with a 28 day course of Fenbendazole (Panacur/Lapizole)
It is essential to bleach clean the Rabbit's environment on days 21 and 28 of treatment and to take every precaution possible to avoid any Rabbit ingesting urine contaminated food/bedding.

If you know the Rex's Breeder then I would advise you to pass this information on to him/her too. All your Rex's siblings are likely to be infected if it is EC.

sounds most likely to be EC, i took my late rabbit to a specialist vets about his eyes, but he was an elderly bun at the time, his was E-cuniculi induced cateracts, they don't tend to operate on them very much, as it doesn't always help, if they did it would cost £1000-£2000 per cateract eye

is your bun showing any other EC symptoms? such as head tilt, seizures, unable to balance properly, kidney problems?

my rabbit although he had cateracts and i treated him with panacur lived a happy life even with his cateracts until his kidney failure worsened and his old age . it was time to let him go

are you panacuring for 28days? it is advisable that you do this

panacuring for 28days and has Baytril, she falls to the side and seams to wee while moving about, she seams happy other wise

Ive no experience with EC related Cateracts, but had a Head Tilt bun that was very wobbly on his feet. The treatments he was on seemed to help him overcome the wobbliness over time, so hopefully this will be the same with your bun.

Vibes from me n my two xx

She needs a non steroidal anti inflammatory too,
It is important to try to reduce the inflammatory response to the EC spores.
It's the inflammation that causes cellular damage.
Please ask the Vet for some Metacam to administer to her daily

Cataracts are very UNUSUAL for young bunnies. It's only common in very old rabbits, like over 11-12 years but it can be halted or fixed. There are drugs out there, depending on the cause of the cataracts, like Desferal-Mn(III).

rabbitlover83: it is cateracts and is due to EC, We now have clementine is on panacur, anti inflammatory, Metacam and Baytril, the others are on panacure as well

Hope she gets better, I can sympathise, my bun has the same. On the same meds too. I've been putting nappies on her as she was peeing everywhere then sitting in it too. The nappy stops it from burning her and keeps her clean.

She was originally on the panacur and metacam about a month and a half ago and started improving within a week, however vet put this down to the metacam so stopped the panacur. She was fine for a few weeks then went downhill drastically the last week, she's been on panacur for three days now and her legs moved this morning which is amazing. She did react to it very quickly the first time as well, have mentioned it to the vet and he says it's unusual for them to react so quickly so I must have a stubborn bunny! I was warned to begin with that it might not work, it could take a long time and that she may never fully get her balance back, but I'll keep my fingers crossed. I have a 28-day course of the panacur with baytril and metacam and then seeing how it goes from there. Hope your wee girl is doing okay.
