Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Mites??

Hi,

I have been getting bitten recently, really itchy bites around my arms, belly and top of my legs (where quaggy sits)

He was itching a bit too so I took him to the vets to ask about him. The vet couldnt find anything so I thought he was fine.

However, I am still getting bitten. I had a closer look at Quag tonight, and he has TINY black bits in his fur, barely visible, but you can sort of see them move if you watch for long enough. He does have dry skin aswell.

Do these sound like mites?

thanks

Sounds like mites to me. Take him back to the vet and get the vet to to the tape test. It's where you put a bit of cellotape over the fur where you see specks and then look under the microscope. If it is mites it's easily treated with Ivermectin either a little tube of paste applied to the skin or an injection.

You shouldn't be paying the consultaion fee again either as it's easily spotted.

eeeww!! Poor little quaggy!!! I cant get to the vets until next week as they shut over the weekend. Is there anything I can get from the pet shop to help for now? I don't want to have to go all weekend without him getting his smooshes on my knee, its how we watch x factor!!

And my bites are pretty big...how can such a little creature leave such a big bite????

You can get stuff from the pet shop but it's not as effective. I'd just wait until you can see a vet if it was me.

Well, took Quag to the vets, and yep, he has mites. The one the vet found was dead, so the spot on stuff from the pet shop is working, so the vet just said to continue using it.

Still cost me £12.60 to be told i was treating him with the right stuff already though!!:?
