  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

wax in ears

Candiflare

I was looking down Ralph's ears with a torch this evening because he often tries to really scratch his left ear hard, and I saw that he has a build up of something (which looks like earwax) completely covering the inside of his left ear (so that I cannot see down it.) Obviously it isn't covering the actual earlobe bit, but it is covering the inside of his ear. This would explain a lot of him shaking his head etc, which he's been doing over months.

The vet is currently treating him for conjunctivitis. Could this be linked? Or does it sound like something different?

It may be that he has Otitis externa (outer ear infection) which *might* be related to the conjunctivitis in that the same strain of bacteria is involved -ie Pasteurella.

Please get your Vet to check his ear ASAP as otitis, once established, is really nasty and extremely difficult to get rid of
Hopefully it's just a build up of wax which is now irritating him but your Vet needs to ensure that the wax plug is not covering a load of pus.

I would advise you not to put anything in his ears yourself to try to clean them until he has been seen by your Vet

Good luck
