Removing teeth

Snowberry

Wise Old Thumper
I am fairly sure Snowdrop is going to lose her bottom teeth after todays accident. Just so that I am prepared what would be involved in removing her teeth?

I have had a bunny with no incisors before so know about cutting food up.

I am really worried that no incisors will affect her diet and as you all know she has a chronic gut problem so this would be a real problem.

I am also really scared about her having a GA, mainly because of her condition but also because the only other time my vet has done a GA on one of my buns (I use another vets for neutering) was on Graham and she lost him.

Is it possible to just remove bottom incisors?

No sorry they will need to take both sets out and also the peg teeth behind the top ones.

I've got an 8 month conti going into tomorrow for an extraction and neuter. His teeth are growing so fast he's needing a burr every 3 weeks at the moment. So this is the better bet for him.

I would have thought both top and bottom would have to be removed or there wouldn't be anything for the top teeth to wear against and they would overgrown.

Not sure about anything of your other questions I'm afraid. Good luck though! I hope whatever happens it goes well.

Why not get her to Frances if you are really worried?

Esme stopped breathing when she underwent a GA for spaying and it took a great deal of courage to put her through it again. I don't think I'd trust anyone else to put her under GA in the circumstances.

Graham's loss was a one-off and really tragic, it's probably something you'll never experience again, but I totally understand why the thought of GA haunts you. It does me and I didn't even lose Esme :(

Squidgy has no incisors and he manages fine. He has his food cut up, manages pellets fine and we chop his hay into manageable bits for him. He's been like this for 6 or so years, so no problems!

I would love for FHB to do the op instead, but I cannot take another day off work to take her there. I suppose I could speak to them about taking her on a Saturday or in an evening. If I left work at 3.15 I think I could make it there by 6pm.

I would also be worried about approaching this with my vet- I dont want her to think I don't trust her.

I have a vet about 10 miles away that I use for neuters and I think I would trust them to do the op more than my current vet, mainly because they have done three GA's for neuters for my bunnies and I have never had a problem.

I am preying she wont need them removed but looking at them I am fairly sure the bottom ones are going to die off.

My poor baby.

It will be all front incisors and peg teeth out yes, not just the bottom set, I'm afraid, so you'd have a gummy bunneh! no more wire chewing incidents after that!

I've just checked my appointment card and their last appointment time is 6.30pm. I only thought of a specialist because it's not run of the mill stuff. I doubt you'd get an appointment with FHB as she is only doing limited hours at the moment (two mornings, I think) but Ruth is a brilliant rabbit vet if you decide to go that route. If you'd struggle to get her there you'd be welcome to bring her here in the evening and I'd be happy to take her to an appointment, though obviously you'd much prefer to hear the consultation yourself. Let me know if I can help at all.

That would be great hun if you would be able to do that for us. I am going to see my vet tomorrow but I am fairly sure she is going to say the teeth will need removing. In which case I will ask her to refer us back to FHB because of the complications with her tummy. I think its just Tuesdays and Thursdays she is working now but any other vet there would be ok. I would just feel better if she was in the hands of a specialist. She has been through too much for us to lose her to a GA.

I hope we can get it sorted and her recovered before the 19th December when they are meant to be going to Fayes for bonding.
