Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. abcess help (rabbit) - post from pig forum*HELP PLZ, BUN NOT EATEN SINCE THURS!*

Wise Old Thumper
can anyone offer advice on this. here is the post -

Poor Eli my 7yr old bun has had a horrible couple of years, firstly he lost his long term girlfriend to cancer and nearly died from pining as refused to eat (had to syringe feed him) then a year later he lost his two new girlfriends to mixy (despite being vacc every 6months) thankfully he coped well this time and didnt pne. then shortly after he developed an abcess in his toe and the vet suggested pts. took him to another vet who said 'no try antibiotics'. they fiinally worked after 4wks !!!! he also developed ear mites during this time poss because his immuune system was low.

now 5months later he has developed yet another abcess in the toe next to the previous one. the vet has given me some antibiotics to give by injection every 3 days (poor Eli hes just going to love that !!)

if that doesnt work then I think we are going to pts

i don't know much about abcesses but fear the vets aren't rabbit vets and pts isn't the only option here????

I'd want to know why the abscess cant be surgically removed and also what abx the Rabbit is on
Hopefully he's on Metacam too.

Many abscesses can be treated with the right Antibiotics.

Also when Kermit had an abscess on his face i used Manuka Honey, which worked really well!

thanks,

i have posted your replies on the piggy forum, and suggested the owner join this one. hope they do.

really hope the bun doesn't get pts for this. :(

the girl from the guinea forum has posted again -

thanks so much - will take a look on the rabbit forum (esp on your post )

hes very lathargic today and hasnt eaten, but that might have been from the stress of going to the vets.

the new vet im with is specialised with rabbits and has lots of his own. he has suggested if this doesnt work amputating his leg, but on an oldish bunny would that be fair ?

hes on antibiotic injection -- ALAMYCIN

she is also going to take a look at this thread so will beable to add to it so if anyone could offer anymore help that would be great. :D

as the bun is lethargic and hasn't eaten, i have suggested tempting him with his fav foods but said he may be in stasis so will need treatment. have asked how long it has been since he has eaten and pooped etc.

think she is joining this forum so will post on here with more details.

hello its my bun (the black and white one in my sig) and yes I am ashamed to say I rarely come on here - sorry because I know how fab you all are !

the vet said they couldnt remove the abcess due to its location and there for would have to either remove the toe or if infection has got into the bone then his leg.

Hes only not been eating since going to the vet (no longer) and is just laying sprawled out in the lower part of his 2 story cage.

Ive got to inject him in his scruff every 3 days with an antibiotic called alamycin, I concerned as they havnt given me any pain relief for him and hes obviously in pain :(

Hello

Firstly you need to get back in contact with the Vet straight away and insist on some pain relief. A Rabbit in pain wont eat. I doubt the Vet would cope with an abscess on his/her foot and no analgesia !!

Hopefully the abx will get the infection under control even if it does not fully resolve. But pain relief really is an absolute must.

have just spoke to the vets receptionist and shes going to speak to the vet so hopefully will get something sorted for the poor chap

hiya  nice to see you on here. your bunnies are gorgeous. what are their names?

as jane has said, pain relief is a must.

hope you can get more info on here. i don't know much about abcesses myself.

sending nose rubs to your boy, hope he feels better soon. xxx

ok so he still hasnt eaten - since thurs !!!!! what do I do ?? he is so lethargic and not intersted in anything ? Im going to phone the vet asap on monday

i think it is an emergency if a bun hasn't eaten for 8 hours. might be 12. :?

i have maxolon, zantac and metacam at home incase they stop eating.

how long has he been on the metacam now? if he wasn't eating because of the pain, i assume he would have started by now. is he drinking and pooping?

try tempting him with his favourite foods. but you may have to start syringe feeding him now.

i would say it is an emergency now if he hasn't eaten since thurs though.

Ive given him all his favourite fruit and veg and he really isnt interested - he loves his pellets too and hasnt even looked at them (normally he rushes to the bowl the moment you put it in)

hes not really pooing but really weeing loads.

he has 2 doses of the metacam

hes due another AB injection tomorrow and i will also fully drain and hibiscrub the abcess too

You have to get him to eat. I would take him to the vets ASAP or it could be fatal. You might have to syringe feed him recovery food which they can give you. If you have a syringe you could try boiling some porridge oats in water with a couple of slices of banana and apple, blending it to a puree and cooling it to room temperature. Wrap your bun in a towel and syringe feed him the puree. I swear by it, it's saved two of my pets when they weren't eating.

Best of luck.

you really need to do it asap. they go downhill so quickly. gut stasis sometimes can take weeks of care to recover from. took a week when matt had it. metacam obv and syringe feeding him every few hours, even through the night.
