  • Please Note - Medical Advice

    Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

    You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

    We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

    Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

So tomorrow..

As already said in 'Rabbit chat' Jemimah will be spayed tomorrow. I have new clean vetbed, newspaper, a snugglesafe and a towel ready, plan to put soft hay only in the hay rack, so I just use Megazorb in the littertray and no hay(to prevent any irritation)? Also should I keep her settled in her cage for a couple of days? I don't want her to hurt/stretch the wound.

Oh also she does have a water bowl, but uses both bottle and bowl. With the bowl though, she has a thing for sitting in it, I assume it would be best to remove it?

She is a house rabbit.

Sorry I've had bunnies spayed before, but the last one was 3 years ago :shock:.

Thanks in advance! :wave::)

sending lots of healing vibes in advance.I would keep her confined to cage for a day or so,and make sure she's been given adequate pain relief.Just keep an eye that she doesnt overlick her wound or nibble at any stitches [although it may just be glued/ subcut stitches] :)

Cage rest is a good idea but she will also need some gentle exercise by day 2 and 3. You really just want to stop her racing around and jumping on to things - as these are the things that will stretch the wound. I would confine her to one room only and give her cage rest for the first day probably, then some time out after this as a little very gentle hop is good for keeping the tummy going.

I would be wary about removing water bowl, it is important she remains hydrated and if she prefers a bowl the last thing you want to do is remove it and she goes thirsty. It takes less effort than drinking from a bottle as well. Everything else sounds fab. :D
Don't forget her packed lunch for the vet for when she comes round from the GA! Good luck, hoping it all goes smoothly :wave:

Can you find her a smaller water bowl so she can't sit in it? I've used a tiny hamster bowl in the past.

One of mine is having an op tomorrow on her foot so I'm just doing the same prep as you. I hope all goes well.
