I Have Some of Rosie's Fur

Rosie Rabbit

Mama Doe
When Rosie was put to sleep on Monday, our vet asked us if we'd like a little of her fur. I was quite taken aback as I've never been asked this before, although I haven't had a bunny put to sleep for 5 years.

So, we came home with a little of Rosie's fur in a bag, which is actually really nice to have. I hope no-one thinks that's morbid.

I was wondering if it's usual practice for vets to do this as I've never heard of it before?

It's not something I've heard of before but I had some fur off the brush I used to brush BungeeBun with and realised a proper lock of fur would be a lovely thing to have.

When I lost Scrat I realised I'd never look at those lovely harlequin ears again:cry: I wish I had a lock of her lovely multicolour fur.

I think it was a wonderful thing for your vet to suggest - it's not morbid at all.

I think that's a lovely idea. What an empathetic Vet you have.

I have some of my first Dog's fur- Paddy 1969-1986.

Aww i think that is a lovely thing. Maybe you could put it in a locket? Means she will always be near you.

Yes, that is a lovely idea. I think I might do that. :)

Our vet is a lovely person, she is one of the 'good ones' out there - very empathetic and caring. I was so impressed with Emma Keeble too, the specialist Rosie had been seeing. She phoned me yesterday to offer her condolences, which I thought was a lovely touch and a gesture she didn't have to make.

We have some of Rosie's brown fur and some lovely white tummy fur.

I've never been asked by a vet but my daughter has fur from her favorite cat and also from her favorite guinea pigs.

She found it very reassuring when they first passed away.:)

When my first three buns died, after I had buried them, I was really upset I'd never get to touch their fur again.

So when I lost Sorrel I made sure to keep a piece :) I've never heard of a vet suggesting it before though, she sounds lovely.

I don't for a second think anything strange or morbid of it. You should see my 'memory box'....It has a feather from our first family pet (a budgie) when I was 10, a piece of my hamster's bedding when I was 17, and little boxes of moulted fur from my bunnies Sassy, Lily and Luna. It's incredibly comforting to still be able to touch their fur, even though they're gone.

I have not yet heard of a vet that offers this to their clients, but if your vet does that is one of the greatest things you can give to an owner who has lost their dear companion and an incredibly thoughtful thing to do :)

I have my Louis's (chinchilla) fur in a pot in my window, when i really really miss him, i get it out, its so silky and soft and still smells of him

I think that is lovely, and it has actually made me quite tearful. :) Thank you for posting this because now I know what I shall want to do if I lose one of my buns. Rosie will always be with you. :)

As a teenager I had 5 nethies: Parsley, Rosemary, Basil, Nutmeg and Dill and as a ten year old I've clipped off a little bit of each of their fur and stuck it with cellotape into my diary at the time. Very pleased I did!

Lovely that you have Rosie's fur! It shows that the vet takes you seriously... as some vets just don't take rabbit seriously enough

I have a memory box too with lots of pretty little boxes inside of past buns fur.....have a couple of whiskers too.

Also have a tissue that was used to stop Spookie's nosebleed the day she was pts

I have a few things, like preserved hay from where my old bunnies last slept, some of their fur, my cats collars, their favourite grooming brush, with my tortoise I have her bed, it still smells of her

When Melba our shetland pony was PTS, the vet asked if I wanted a lock from her mane. I, for some reason, think it is a bit more common for people to keep a bit of their horse's mane- I know of a couple of people who have done it. I guess it is easier to get a big chunk of hair from a horse.
Nice thought though and the locket idea is lovely.

No I don't think its morbid, I have some of Gabriels fur and I still have his ashes. I also smell it sometimes when I miss him badly

Binky free sweet Rosie xxx

Thats very caring of your vet.

I dont have Kermits fur, but i have his nail that fell off once and i also have about 10 of his whiskers, i used to save them if they fell out, which they did alot with him having head tilt.

Funny thing is that i found some of his whiskers on the floor weeks after he had gone, and even after i had hoovered a few times.:love:

I have his ashes beside my bed too x
