  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Would you vaccinate ?

Maddie has osteomyellitis in her jaw and her most recent abscess was removed just 5 weeks ago. She is still on abx at my insistance as I feel this is the only chance she has - although my vet isn't so sure about continuing long term..... i digress....

She is happy and appears healthy, eating, binkying etc but is due her VHD jab. Now, we've had the same dilemma before when she was due myxi jab a few months ago and at that stage we though she had "just" abscesses, and not actual infection in the bone.

So the questions are - would a vaccination a) be effective, and
b) do more harm than good given the infection is there?

I've not discussed this with my vet yet, I'll do so before making any decision anyway.

Thanks guys

If her immune system is compromised then it won't create the antibodies. I would be less worried about a delayed VHD jab than myxi as it's less common and the vaccine seems to offer more reliable protection than myxi so there may be more leeway for delaying the jab a little.
