  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

the vet explained that they suppress the immune system and that a bunny can become more prone to abcesses, short term they can be good but long term bad. i didnt notice any side effects when pearl was on steriods tho, not even increased appetite shes always been greedy lol

The steroids you mean are corticosteroids and have many side effects in both humans and rabbits. It is 'generally' thought I believe that their use in rabbits should really be as a last resort or if there is a very good reason e.g. a big inflammatory reaction for example in the respiratory airways or to control an autoimmune condition - which is how they are often used in human medicine. Steroids depress immune function so bun may become more compromised immune wise in terms of white cell count and then less able to fight any existing infection, which is why I suppose they may not always be appropriate if bun has an infectious agent. Their use may increase the chances of a latent infection flaring up also no doubt.
Steroids also interfere with adrenal gland function in humans (whether or not this relates to rabbits i'm not sure).
