  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Lateral Ear Canal Resection ?

Jack's-Jane

Wise Old Thumper
Has anyone had a Rabbit for whom this proceedure has been carried out ?

Was it successful and were there any post op' complications ?

I'm sorry to hear that, i'm sure he's in the best hands if you do decide to proceed and me and my buns will be thinking of him and you. :)

I have had two bunnies where this was done, very strangely both had an abscess in the middle ear at the same time that we could not clear with anything.

The operation was successful on both and made them much more comfortable. However, Pippa unfortunately never recovered fully as she wasn't in the best of health to start off with, so she died a couple of weeks after the op! (She was 9 years old at the time.)

Sunny however recovered fully, he was doing so well. But unfortunately he developped very aggressive cancer three months after the op (nothing to do with the op or the ears) and died four months after the op due to the cancer.

But if I ever had a bunny again with similar problems, then yes, I would do it again. It made them so much more comfortable.

Thank you Vera :)

Hi, Archie had this done last month to remove his abscess again. So far it looks to be healing well and he seems to be coping well although he's still shaking his head so it must be irritating.

This is Archie a few days ago

I hope this op has been a success, we go back to the vets next week to get his stitches removed. He definitely is more comfortable than he was even with the wound :)
