Cataract in one eye

Wooly

Young Bun
We got our new rescued bunny today and he's lovely  We're hoping he'll make a lovely partner to our girlie who lost her husbun a month ago.

He's been checked out at the rescue centre etc and is in good health, apart from having a cataract in one eye. Do any of you have any advice / info as to what to expect? Is it likely that his other eye will get affected eventually? It seems fine now and he is a happy chappy and we're delighted to have him :D

It may mean she goes blind in that eye but it's unlikely to be a problem. Firefly has cataracts in both eyes (plus a corneal absces atm ) but he manages to navigate a long garden and find his hutch with no prob at all...

Thanks for answering Tinsel and sorry about his corneal abcesses :(

Thank you..hopefully it's under control, but the vet said it's too soon to know for sure if his eye can be saved.

He did say the sight loss affects buns very little though, so the cataracts on their own are not really a problem and your little girl should be fine

I think a lot will depend on the cause of the cataract. Is is cloudy all over or is there a deep white spot in one area? Did the rescue have any idea of its cause?

this is my mowgli he is totally blind he developed them in one eye which got worse 3months after his other eye got cateracts too, but the vet told us it would happen we took him to an eye specialist vet and they did tests to see in his other eye

you'll be surprised how well they adapt and get around using touch and smell, and sound senses

One of my girls has a cataract- the vet thought it may have been caused by a small injury, so small that I didnt notice it.
She is absolutely fine though and it doesnt seem to bother her at all.

Thanks for your replies, they're v. reassuring. It is cloudy on pretty much the whole cornea but so far doesn't seem to affect him.

coco has age related cateracts in both eyes and sees little close up at all now, he is fine he gets along well with his girlfreind bun and is a happy chappy he manages to negotiate lots of things the only problem i found with him is that he trys to eat teh food befoer is in the dish meaning you have to wach your fingers as he only goes by smell so doesnt know which is food or hand!!

vicky had a bun called stitch who had one eye and was almost blind in it too he uused to scan slowly move head side to side to try and focus on anything and in new enviroments would bump into things so needed stuff to stay in the same place with the same sortv smells then he was fine xx
