Further to a thread regarding the side effects of the VHD injection Cylap, i thought it may be interesting to see how many people's buns have had a problem with it whether it is simply off colour or limping or a more serious complaint.

I am planning to write a letter to add to their complaints pile but thought i'd create a poll and possibly include the resulting statistics.

(hope i don't get in trouble - i've never done a poll before:p)

One of mine did.
My vets are, apparently, really inconsistant with the VHD vaccine. :? First year, when I had just the one pair, they had Cylap with no reaction. I only later discovered the two different kinds, so looking at their vaccine card and seeing they'd had the one associated with possible limps/stiffness made me only slightly anxious. They had no reaction, so I thought no more about it. The next year, when I had two pairs, they all had Lapinject. So I was happy, figuring they'd switched and I wouldn't have to worry about it.

Took my five this year for their vaccines - and foolishly never looked at the vaccination cards afterwards, because I assumed it was Lapinject. Out of five bunnies, only one had a reaction... But! He was not using his front leg for three days overall. By the third day he was sort of using it, and he never seemed down or unwell, in fact he was very lively, but it was upsetting to witness. I'm going to ask for Lapinject next time. Considering they know us as 'the ones with all the rabbits', I figure we must make up a decent percentage of their rabbity customers in this area! They've mentioned before how rare it is around here for people to vaccinate, so hopefully any request will be listened to.

Ralphy went off colour, had a liquid filled sack of skin on his back where the injection went in, he couldn't turn around to groom himself because it hurt to much. It all went away after a week of the cylap injection.

Up until about 3 years ago we always used cylap for all our bunnies and we never had a problem with a single bunny, even elderly and problem buns :D

Out of a total 6 doses I've had done (4 rabbits), 1 dose gave a noticable reaction. Hopefully next time since I'm taking 4 I can get lapinject.

Horrific skin reactions in 7 of my buns with Cylap - one still has a bare patch on her side almost 14 MONTHS later!!

Got both the buns done (Cylap) and only my girl had a reaction to it, very moody and limp in right front leg for about 48 hours.
I was straight on here when I noticed the limp to see if anyone else's buns has experienced this.. looks like they have!

Spoke to my vet who said they had never heard of it and didn't think it was related. I asked if I could give her Metacam, she said yes, gave Lavender a small dose for 2 days and she was fine.

They'd always been fine with it until this last time, when Ginger got the Cylap limp so badly I thought he'd broken his back! Pickle had it a bit too though, and I realised through coming on here that was why. That was the start of my RU obsession!

Never again though, it's Lapinject from now on.

Yeah, that was Bull:censored:! My sister is a vet too, and although they've been taught all about the affects Cylap can have they aren't allowed to admit it to their clients - apparently Cylap will sue if they do!

Alvin got the limp the first time he had it.
then the 2nd one was fine.
the last one he got a small scab that went away on its own but he had only just had a bad case of stasis so his skin probably wasnt totally recovered from the scabs he got from all the injections for stasis.

Pearl had the other type at the rescue, so the first jab she had with me was Cylap and she got some quite nasty scabs. the last one was trouble free :D

from my whole bunny experience of two  i get the impression that side effects happen on the first dose, but not on any further injections, i guess i need more bunnies tho to test this theory :D

Daisy was definitely affected after her cylap VHD vacc - she had a bad limp for quite a while (I remember at least two, maybe three vet visits about it as we were worried she'd damaged her foot) as well as blisters on the back of her neck around the injection site.

Yes I did think that and said that I had read it on a specialist bunny website/forum and she told me that if its not on the information sheet then it can't be anything to do with the injection!!
I didn't push it as I don't have the knowledge to argue and I was worried about Lavender and wanted to find out what was best for her.

I did forget to put in my original post that Lavender and Leo (sadly no longer with us) and Simba (this was his first injection with me) have always had Cylap before and never had an ill affects from it.

I had three buns (weighing 1.4, 1.5, 1.6kg) have varying reactions of losing fur and dry flakey skin (both as a localised reaction, but also all over their body). It was weight dependent and the smaller the bunny, the worse the reaction. Badger went blad over a lot of his body, and when they majority grew back he was left with a bald patch about the size of a 10p for about half a year.

I changed vets after that fiasco and my new vet said the smaller ones can have a half dose, because they are smaller, and it still covers them fully. So we vaccinate anybun under 1.7kg with a half dose (which, out of my 16 is 14 of them) and we've not had any problems since.
