Young Bun
Hi, I posted on here yesterday asking for some advice on socialising with our bunnies. Someone suggested using the whole shed, (Benjamin and Peter are only 10 weeks old and don't have their winter coats) opening up the hutch and creating a bigger play area, they also suggested I ask for some ideas of what we could make the shed look like and how to adapt it!! Any ideas would be greatfully received!!! We are new to this game, though if you read my previous posts, I had bunnies when I was younger and one became wild which is why I'm so worried this will happen again, though i'm now not a little girl and not afraid of animals anymore!!!! Thanks everyone for your help!!!! xx

It's a really good idea to install a catflap in the shed so they can have access to the run. You can then lock it for safety at night if you wish as you may have foxes in your area (I have seen them in Cardiff and Port Talbot so it's plausible that you have them in Bridgend too).

If you are worried about them being cold then you can leave their hutch in the shed sand stuff it full of hay and put in a heat pad so they can go and snuggle up in there should they wish.

Hi, yes we do have foxes around here, one comes in to the garden from time to time too. I also need to be careful as I have a dog, he may also pose a threat to the bunnies but I am working on that one too, it's a slow process with Taz!! But oneday I'm sure he will be fine, though never unsupervised!!! Thanks for ure advice!!

Oh, wow, thats fantastic!!!!!!!!!! I want to do something like that!!! Did you find it easier to bond with them when they have a large play area? Thats what we're struggling with though we have only had them a few days!!! Was it easy to do? Where did you get all the wood and wire from? xx

We got them from a rescue so they were already bonded. The run came from the rescue too, but is only 5 ft :(. We had a builder (a friend of ours) come to fit the ccatflap and the inner doors. They are in two parts so that I can open the top part to get in and they cannot run out between my legs. The same builder is going to make a bigger run (on the grass) in the spring. I have to peg the cat flap open as only one bunny knows how to use it!

They have something similar in pets at home, I'll look into that. Thanks for the ideas!! It's fab!! Bonding is probably the wrong word to use, our bunnies are brothers, I meant us bonding with them and gaining their trust. Sorry. xx

The shed allows you to get down to their level, so they are less scared of you. If the shed is big enough, then you can lie down on the floor (watch where you lie though ) This allows them to inspect you closely, and can lead to them climing on you! Oh, and are they neutered?

With your shed w1lll, have you covered the floor with lino or anything to prevent rats and the floor rotting? We are certainly going to look into doing something like that!!! It is soooooo fab looking!!

It's too early to neuter them yet they are only 10 weeks old. When is the best time to neuter them?

The floor is covered with some rubber matting type stuff. I did have newspaper on top but the bunnies kept on pulling it up.

EDIT: So many typos in 2 sentances!

 We covered the base of our sheds with lino to make them easier to clean.
Do your two bunnies live together already? Even if they are brothers they will need neutering asap to prevent any fights if they are already living together. Most vets will do boys from 12 weeks I believe. Time is definitely of the essence if they are already together.
If they are living separately then you can neuter them whenever convenient to you so long as they stay separate and are not put together for at least a couple of weeks after their neuter to allow hormones to settle etc. :)

Yes they are living together, they were in pets at home too. They are only 10 weeks old so we can't have them neutered yet. Do we still need to keep them separate after having them neutered if they live together now? There is more work involved in having bunnies than having a dog!! Taz wasn't this difficult to look after!!

So long as they do not fight between now and being neutered I think they can stay together after neutering.
I had 4 boys, all brothers, living together but they were neutered dead on 12 weeks as soon as their bits had dropped.
After neutering they were separated into pairs and I am in close contact with one of the homes a pair went to and occasional contact with another and to my knowledge the brothers have never fought.
However I also had a group of 2 does and 3 bucks (all neutered asap and all family) living together who lived happily for 2 years before a big fight (one buck had caused a nasty laceration to the other one under his jaw :( ) between 2 of the bucks meant we had to remove one buck from the group as they had drawn blood and so could never go back together.

Sorry I'm rambling. What I'm just trying to say is it really is of the upmost import that 2 boys living together are neutered asap before any dominance issues arise, I think if done very early then they shouldnt need to be separated after op if both done at the same time. I would suggest leave them together but keep a very close eye on them for any fighting. Meanwhile call whichever vet you're using and find out when they will neuter from and explain your situation.

Meanwhile while waiting for neuter if you see any probs between them I would separate and rebond a few weeks after neuter. Once bunnies have drawn blood and had a real proper fight I think it is very hard to ever bond them back together.

I hope that helps
