  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Scared to death about myxo

Been reading the threads about the :censored: myxo, and it breaks my heart.

Its really been worrying me (to the point im having nightmares about it). All 4 bunsters are up to date with all jabs. But are due in December 09, is it safe for them to have it now?.

Try not to worry too much. Remember that a lot of people with myxo buns will be looking for help and answers and find their way here and you may hear about it all the time... but there are still probably lots more buns around the country not getting it. That's not to say that vaccination isn't important - it is. I'm just covering myself here in case members of public reading this thread.

I think the worst months are Aug and Sept. It is unusually warm this Autumn which is causing probs with biting insects in October no doubt. Hopefully by Nov/Dec the risks will have dropped considerably. If there are any outbreaks near you or you see any wild buns near you with Myxi then perhaps discuss bringing vac forward with your vet. Otherwise I would not worry too much.

Thinking for the future . . . it might be worth bringing the forward a month now, and then another month in spring - so that by next summer/autumn they can have their jabs in August just at the start of the myxi season - rather than being mid-way through the six month cycle in sept/oct.

I must admit Im like this with flystrike.
Pretty lupin is right..its a forum..a place for folk to chat bunny and ask for help/advice etc.
If you take a look around, you will find alot of forums are chockfull of problems..I belong to 3 animal forums...here,one for parrots and one for ferrets...same thing.I see it and wonder.Ive been lucky enough to own ferrets for 20 yrs and not too many serious problems.Thats lucky.
Its heartbreaking hearing all this stuff...rather demoralising too and makes you think A)Im not unlucky...my lot are fine and B)make you sweat a bit.
Enjoy each day as it comes.xxx

Try not to worry too much about it. I asked my vet yesterday if he'd seen more cases recently and he said "no more than normal" (he's a rabbit specialist by the way).
