Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Lola-bum and her sore hocks :(

Jaysmonkey

Wise Old Thumper
I took Lola to see a rabbit specialist last night, because for the past month her hocks have been slightly inflammed.
She always has blankets out and even a duvet- you can't see the carpet when she's out, her cage has a layer of vetbed over a fleecy blanket, her litter tray is changed twice a day, her nails are cut to the correct length and she's the weight (2.6kg) she should be :) Her cage is also changed daily.
However they just seem to have been getting worse  I'm stuck for ideas. We've been given Metacam, which she is to have 1.3ml twice a day for 1 week then 0.6ml for the following week again twice a day. Does anyone know of anything else I could do to help her?

The specialist also noticed that to the right one of Lola's molars is starting to spur. She has a constant fresh supply of hay and leafy greens every day (twice), which she has always had. The specialist said to ensure she has these and hopefully it should go, otherwise she needs a dental and general anesthetic . Since she's always had these is there anything else I could do to help get rid of this spurring before it gets serious?

I'm to go back with Lola in 2 weeks.

Any help would be highly appreciated, Thanks in advance! :)

She may not need to have a GA for a dental, if it is clipping and filling then they may be able to do a consious dental, that is what Jimby had.
They will put a small gag in her mouth and just hold her still.
Still not very nice but better than having her put under.
The BEST thing is hay a good quality Timothy Hay which she really ahs to sink her teeth in to should keep them under control and hopefully stop them getting any worse.
We are now using OXBROW Timothy Hay, Oxbrow Orchard Grass, Oxbrow Oat Hay(More as a treat) and Excel Fresh Forage to line his cage and potty with which he LOVES!!

Have you tried the kids rubber mats or stable mats? I know you are indoors but may be worth a try. The idea is that because the nails sink into it the rabbit stands in a way that doesn't apply as much pressure to the hock.

Yes this is exactly what my vet said, it's a common case in house buns due to this fact.:(

I haven't tried the rubber matting, so will definately have a look into it, Thanks for the advice :) x

Thanks, she normally has hay bought in a bale from my local farm. I'll definately try some new hay, but the Timothy Hay I did originally try she stuck her nose up at and just seemed to prefer the farm stuff. Will go browse hayexperts now! Thanks very much :) x
