A good rabbit vet in Central Scotland

Crunchie

Warren Veteran
Right all I'm getting a bit worried about Honey in this thread here...

http://forums.rabbitrehome.org.uk/showthread.php?t=198781

I am trying to find a good vet preferably in the Stirlingshire area though I can go anywhere in the central belt if it means my mind is put to rest and Honey is seeing a vet that knows exactly what he/she's doing. It seems that some of the advice I've been given by the vet who is currently looking after her is perhaps not as sound as it should be.

What about this place? This is where I took a snake to have an operation before.

If it comes to it would it be a really bad idea for me to remove her from my current vet and take her elsewhere? She is being given fluids and liquid food at my current vets.

Not sure where you are or if this is reachable but my friend takes all her buns here and they have been excellent to her and them. Probablyu not as knowledgable as some vets about but they shopped around for them and found them.

She sees Ian. http://www.broadleysvets.co.uk/

I would avoid Broadleys like the plague. They really messed up when my Flynn was ill (I had to see them it was a Sunday and my vet was not open). It was a horrid woman who told me to get Flynn PTS because he was paralysed, then told me to give him a 9 day course of panacur, i had to correct her and say 28 days. Oh and she then said "well you probably know more about rabbits than me, they are your subject, horses are mine" . Flynn can now walk again and is healthy, and despite a very serious complaint by me, i have not heard back from them.

Pets Friend in Stenhousemuir is where i go. Mr Charity is amazing with bunnies. I trust him 100%. He is the only vet there, the only time you will see a different vet is if he is on holiday.

I have used almost all of the Falkirk vets and can honestly honestly say the only person i trust, who cares about the animals, not lining his pocket, is David at Pets Friends.

When Kermit was ill with Head Tilt i was referred to the Vet Hospital in Glasgow to see Alistair Lawrie.
He is an exotics specialist, and he has his own practice in Falkirk, thats kinda close to you. x

I have used Lawrie vet too (in Falkirk, he goes between Falkirk and Glasgow). They are ok as long as you get Alistair, Mr Orsey or an irish vet who's name escapes me.

Sadly, i have a horror story from there too. When my Holly hurt her leg, they took her in for surgery, refused to give me her home and left her alone all night. She chewed her stitches and had to have more surgery the next day :(. Where as if i had her home, i would have stayed up with her. But it was a woman again that Holls saw. I dont have much luck with female vets :?.

It's McGuire and Lawrie Honey is in just now and it's the Irish vet that has been dealing with her (mum reckons he has a Belfast accent). He has said to me that if Honey doesn't start pooing/eating by tomorrow morning he'd want to open her up to have a look. He said this was very risky and would only be used as a last resort. She hasn't pooed since saturday morning but ate a little on Saturday night.

At the moment I am completely torn with regards to what to do with Honey. The **** vet school in edinburgh has a rabbit clinic but I don't know if I'd be making things worse by asking them to move her.

From what I have heard Mr Charity sounds very good :)

I have also recommended my vet to a few people, he is called Romain Pizzi and works at Inglis vets in Dunfermline. He is a really great exotics vet. There is some info about him here: http://romainpizzi.com/index.htm

ETA he used to work at the Edinburgh vet school.

Thats really fab, i always knew you had a great vet, but i didn't know you had THE great vet . Thats really cool, its really great he is taking the time to help you too.

I know I feel very lucky:) I didn't realise he was so famous though  I didn't get to see his tv show.

Sorry Crunchie I meant to say whatever you decide to do I hope Honey will be ok.

Guys every time I see a reply to this thread I think it's someone offering advice.

Is there any chance you could keep the banter off of this thread just now at least until my mind's a bit more at ease thanks in advance.:)

I loved the show, i learned a lot from it.

Crunchie, i really hope Honey is ok too.

ETA - sorry i had posted the same time as you left your last message.

you can ask in the vet for a second opion for one of the others to look at her its normally alaster who does any major ops on them I know there 7 different vets in the practice also Julie at reception who is off this week has 10 rabbits herself and knows alot more than me about rabbits ...I really do hope your wee ones ok I know its a worry for you But Im sure there doing everything they can for her

I'm just a bit worried that given she has shown a bit of improvement today the guy is being a bit too hasty with the operating.

I really don't know what to do.

I am really sorry crunchie, I know you must be very worried. I do have some advice this time. If you really don't have much confidence in the vet she is with now and don't feel she is getting the appropriate treatment then the sooner you move her to someone more experienced the better. If she was my bun I would take her straight to Romain because he is the only vet I trust with things as serious as this, the Dunfermline surgery also has 24 hour nursing care and they do take referals. I can't comment on the other vets recommended because I don't know them. If you were to get a referal to the Edinburgh vet school you would be faced with a huge bill! If Honey is insured then that won't be as much of a problem but it is something to consider.

If you decide to keep her where she is then they can't operate on her without your permission so if you want to just keep going with the meds and see how she does then that is what they will have to do.

Sorry to hear you're having problems finding a good vet.

I can't really offer much advice except to say that we've had to take Rosie to the Royal D*ck Vet School a couple of times recently for tests into her health problems. We've gone through from Ayrshire, so it's quite a journey, but our vet recommended we take her there. There's a rabbit clinic run by Brigitte Reusch who was the Resident at Bristol and really is an expert. We didn't see her - we saw Emma Keeble who has done a lot of research into E Cuniculi. But they are all exotics specialists and it's maybe worth considering.

The consultation fee we paid for a referral was £120. It's been a heck of a lot more than that for all the tests Rosie's been having, but that was optional and was our decision.

Hope that helps, good luck whatever you decide.
