Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Young Bun
Hello, hopefully just a quick question, I did try to ring the vets buy my usual vet is not in this weekend.

My bun had abscesses around beginning of June time, these have since removed and reduced and I have been giving injections on the back of the neck with Dupaphen every other day since that time, I am due to finish at the end of the this month. (Although I understand some may come back as a small amount of bacteria may exist).

I think my buns may have mites again as they are molting rather a lot and I can see a few flakes. I really want to put some treatment on the back of their necks for this but I am worried about the implications from the injections I am giving and the lumpiness that still exists in the injection sites. Should I wait and take to vets to test for mites first?

Any advice appreciated.

Generally, Ivermectin (drug of choice for fur mites in rabbits) is pretty safe BUT it is an insecticide and if it were my buns and they were already a bit under the weather and undergoing treatment for abcesses I would want to be confident that applying the Ivermectin was necessary i.e. a sure certainty that it is likely to be mites, and not just normal dandruff from moulting. I don't think it will do any harm but I would want to just check it out first to be honest. Mites do tend to flare up when bun is run down so it does seem possible.
A skin scrape doesn't always pick mites up and some vets will want to treat for mites anyway if suspected so it's up to you really. If already a few injection site issues at the back of the neck I think I would ask for injectable Ivermectin rather than the Xeno 450 spot on so that no potentially irritating liquid goes on the existing injection sites. :)

Thanks, I will take the buns to the vets just in case.

I think it is mites, my other bun has been having a few catastrophes lately and had the same symptoms when she had them before.
