  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Swollen Ear

Rosie Rabbit

Mama Doe
Just before we left the vet hospital today with Rosie (saga in Rabbit Chat!) I noticed one of her ears was quite swollen. It's just like a "thick ear" really - feels heavier and bigger than the other one, and it's a bit inflamed. We took her back in and the vet had a look (they didn't spot it before they discharged her ) and she said that there did seem to be an oedema inside the ear, near the top.

There's no sign of a bite mark or anything like that, and no discharge. Nothing else is swollen either. She seems to have developed it while in the hospital, and I don't think it's anything to do with the line she had going into her ear when having her investigations done.

It doesn't seem to be bothering her, and she's on 2 types of antibiotics for her lung problem, so that might be a good thing. She's also on Metacam.

Anyone have any ideas what this could be or heard of anything similar?

Well if it was the ear she had the line in I would have thought that could be the cause :?
But I aint gonna argue with the experts !!

It may well be that Jane, the vet didn't really commit herself one way or the other - she seemed a bit puzzled. :?

I am probably worrying over nothing. But I will keep an eye on it. Thanks!
