I have such bad luck

Helo

I have such bad luck with poor George! Today he went to the vet for his Myxomatosis vacc and whilst on the table he struggled and panicked. Usually I hold onto him but there was a different vet there today who said he could handle George. Anyway, whilst he was holding him George struggled and managed to leap off the vet table, through the air and kind fo banged against the sideboard and fell onto the floor. It was such a big fall but luckily George managed to fall onto his feet. I rushed over to pick him up and held him. The vet didn't even seem bothered  I didn't want him to touch him after that. He made no attempt to catch George he just let him jump!!!!! THEN when I asked if George would be OK< expecting him to check him over he just shrugged and said 'oh he'll be fine'. He told me to check him over myself tonight :evil: arrrghi'm soo annoyed!!

George seems OK, he's hopping fine and doesn't seem bothered at all. He's now just resting under the table, but i'm panicking now and have been looking up rabbit fractures. I've read these are quite common? Has anyone's rabbits ever had a bad fall? I usually take him to a really good rabbit-savvy vet but as it's quite far from me and he just needed a vaccination I took him to my old vets which was just down the road. I'm so annoyed with them i'm never going back again. Should I take him to get checked over tomorrow?! How would I tell if he had fractured his back or leg?? Help!!

First off, take some deep breaths.

How is George acting in himself? Eating? Drinking? Pooing? Weeing? lively?

If he fractured his back he would most likely show some paralysis in the hind area, maybe full paralysis of both the back legs.

If he fractured his leg he would be holding it up.

Whilst bunnies hide their pain you would be able to see the consequences of a fracture.

Having said that, if you are concerned then yes, get him checked out, if only for your own peace of mind.

Have you thought about putting a complaint in?

If he had fractured a leg he would be unlikely to put any weight on it, he would probably not be eating and would be sitting hunched in pain grinding his teeth.

If he is hoping around Ok and eating as usual, hopefully he will be just fine :)

What a frightening experience for you both though :(

3 words - Change Your Vet!

Otherwise, just as Sky-O has said. Poor little bun, I hope he's ok!

Well, having posted on another thread recently saying I had two vets - one specialist for anything serious a bit further afield and another closer to home for more routine things like vaccinations, it's definitely made up my mind to stick to the specialist.

This idiot was useless and I made sure I knew I was dissatisfied - especially when he asked me to check him over when I got home. I made a very shocked face and said 'well i'm hardly a vet'. He didn't even seem to care this bunny had just lept off his table and fallen on the hard floor as he stood there and watched him jump! If he let me hold him myself, which I normally do, then he would have been fine. Stupid new vet

George seems fine, he's eating fine and seems to be hopping about his cage OK, both hind legs seem to be fine. He's quite quiet but he's probably shocked. I was just paranoid he may have fractured something and is just trying to cover it up. I might go and get him checked over anyway. In the meantime he's getting lots of cuddles and treats from me.

I would suggest making a written complaint, so that it goes down officially.

In terms of George, don't forget the jab will also make him a bit quieter. Just give him lots of treats as well as love and cuddles :) Hopefully he will be fine, but if you get him checked out, please let us know how it goes.

Hope George is ok! Just read this :( Poor you, what a shock! Just keep a close eye on him, any probs then take him to David More rather than back to that other vet. These things happen, try not to worry too much.
I'm sorry i've not emailed you back yet....will try to tomorrow. :)

Hello
I had a similar incident with Eric last year. He jumped out of my husbands arms, onto his shoulder and up to the ceiling and straight back down again. About 7ft drop:evil::evil:
My vet just picked him up and put him in his carrier and said he would probably be a bit stiff the next day, but if I had any concerns to take him back the next day.
He was fine and no damage done.
Hope poor George is o.k, but if any doubt at all, take him back and ask to see a different vet.

Hello Sky-O

Just seen your post - he seems back to normal today, thank god! Binkying around which is good and his legs seem in good working order, phew!! I'm writing a letter of complaint to the vet because i've had so many problems there now, this just topped it off.

I'm so glad he is doing well.

And good on you for writing a complaint. I hope they realise how appallingly your bunny and you have been treated.

What an awful experience for you and George :(. Im glad he is not hurt though.

My vet examines bunnies on the floor (on his knee's) because he had a bunny jump off a table and never wanted that to happen again.
