Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

How to find out if bun has been neutured

Biscuit Bunny

Alpha Buck
Hi there

I was told Biscuit had been neutured, however I have doubts in the back of my mind whether this is actually the case, and in reality was I told this so I would be more willing to take her.

They said they had lost her vet record card, I asked numerious times for their vet name and to double check she had been neutured, but no reply.

Now is there a way to find out without putting her under GA?

The specific hormone for rabbits has not yet been isolated - so a hormone injection (the one that triggers the one you're after LH or FSH or whatever it is) and blood tests before and after would therefore be inconclusive. I should think your best bet Clare would be an ultrasound - like I said on Sunday! :) She may not need a GA for that. :?

ETA I agree - she should have a scar somewhere!

Sorry that post wasn't very good. :( I don't know if ultrasounds can be done without a GA. :? I'm not sure how they transmit through all that fur!
The only other way I know of is a blood test. We went through this - well not actually to the point of doing the bloods, but discussed it with Mackie when we were wondering if Poppy had had an incomplete spay and there was some remaining ovarian tissue. He said there was a protocol to be followed when doing the bloods which he checked out first and then rang me up. I think they do an initial blood, then give bunny a hormone to stimulate the ovaries (so I guess this would only work in buns with ovarian tissue - not incomplete spays where the uterine horns have been left behind?) and retest the blood again. I can't remember exactly now but he explained that they have not isolated the hormone in rabbits to test this specifically and therefore any change in hormone levels may be normal fluctuations - and therefore inconclusive. I can't remember what they test for whether it is FSH or Oestrogen itself?:? So we didn't bother and Poppy's behaviour turned out to be purely behavioural.
Anyway, this was 2 years ago - perhaps things have moved forward since then? :) I'm interested to know how they find out if a bun has had a spay without opening them up? I'm guessing ultrasound? :?
BUMP!

I have been in this same situation of not knowing and it seems that there really isn't an answer unless there is a scar - which if its a very good surgeon there might not be very noticeably.

Its so irritating as you know very well that ALL your other buns know whether that bun is hormonal or not by how she smells to them. I sat there and said to them all - you know - now just tell me!!! But they didn't!!

We were unsure if my girl Foofoo had been spayed or not so we took her to a specialist vet who performs laparoscopic surgery to find out.

She was spayed thankfully and I'm glad she had the vaginoscopy done instead of being opened up. She was sore for a few days after the procedure but its much less invasive than surgery.

I think its difficult to tell if a bun has been spayed by an ultrasound, both vets I took Foofoo to see said this.

ETA Foofoo had a GA for the vaginoscopy. I think having an ultrasound done means having a GA too, not totally sure on that one though.
