  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

bunny ear problems, worried

Ralphy has just started shaking his ears a lot, his left ear is constantly down (while the right is up and doing all the listening) and he keeps scratching the left one and turning in circles. He looks really agitated and is not eating as much. He's not off his food, but he normally devours it (now he's picking at it.) What do you think is wrong?

I think he needs a vet. With ear issues you shouldn't mess with them because of the risks of head tilt, issues with the brain, etc.

I personally think this sounds like ear mites, but eqaully it cvould be something else, and the ear mites, which sound pretty severe if one ear is down, can cause further complications, such as infection.

I'd get him to a vet as soon as you can. Make sure he keeps eating because the fact he is going off his food is a big indication he is feeling rough.

Thanks Sky-O. I called the vet, vet said it sounded like ear mites, like you. He's now not doing it anymore, back to being ravenous for his food again, which is a good thing. I've just put him to bed, I think he's okay and will check him first thing tomorrow and take him to the vets.

Thanks for responding
