  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Mushy poo within the past hour

Selene has started having mushy very smelly poo within the past hour or so, only thing different we've given to her is some Oat, Wheat, & Barley hay by Alfalfa King last night and earlier this morning.
I managed to find a bit she'd not stepped in and they look like they were meant to be ceceotropes (due to some of them being tiny circular shapes bunched together) but are not tightly formed, easily mushed, and a much lighter brown than her cecals.
She didn't drink much water overnight but has been drinking, eating, and acting as usual today so far.

It is probably the new hay type that has caused her to pass excess caecals. As long as she is eating, drinking and passing normal 'hard poos' then I would just hold off on the new hay type for 48 hours and avoid feeding carrots/fruit.
Just feed half her normal concentrate feed and provide her with 24/7 access to the hay she's used to.
A probiotic in her drinking water may help too.

It looked like she had normal fecals this morning and everything else seems normal. She's sleeping in her tunnel warren right now (normal for her around this time of day) so I'll keep a watch on her whenever she comes out.
We don't feed her veggies or fruit yet. Tried broccoli almost a week ago but it gave her an upset tummy and what looked like big soft fecals so we didn't give her anymore and things sorted themselves out within a day.
Feed half her pellets?
Yep, has umlimited access to timothy hay.
What brand/type of probiotic?
