A little bit strange

My rabbit Rowan passed away two weeks ago, today after I'd finally gotten round to emptying out her hutch, my father then set about dismantling it. All the time while he was doing this our dog, Barney was sitting out there watching. The whole time he was whining softly. It was so strange, Barney and Rowan were never close, every so often they'd sniff each other through the wire but that was it. Is it possible he understood what was happening? Has anyone else seen anything like this happen between pets?

Whenever I lost a pet, My cat Basil (RIP) used to lay exactly where we buried them for up to 2 weeks after their burial. She never dug, never did anything but sleep there, as if she was mourning. She was a beautiful cat .
