  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Young Bun
Hey guys im writing from Austalia where im travelling at the moment so would appriciate any answers ASAP!

My mum back home is looking after my bunny Rosie and has just let me know that she is ill. Shes not eating, not her usual self just sitting and leaning quietly and is apparently making a rasping noise occasionally. Its hard for me to describe as im not there but i was wondering if anyone reconised these symptons or could tell me anything about respiratory infections?

Shes booked in for the vets this morning, i just feel so helpless on the otherside of the world and not knowing whats going on! :(

It sounds as though she has a RTI and prompt Vet care is needed.
She may need to be hospitalised for intensive care especially as she is not eating. Pneumonia is a possibility.

Medications may include antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, a mucolytic, fluids (IV or subcutaneaous), gut motility meds and syringe feeds.
Oxygen therapy may also be required if Bun is in respiratory distress

I hope your Bun will respond to treatment

ETA If Rosie is not spayed then there is always a risk of a Uterine adenocarcinoma -uterine cancer which usually spreads to the lungs.
