View Full Version : Leo- U/D Worse :-(......And Bernie Too U/D 1515hrs-Leo Has Gone :-(

15-09-2009, 01:58 PM
Leo (7.5 years old) has a GI impaction and bloat. He has become very, very poorly. He is obviously on medication and fluid therapy but he has been like this since 0530hrs and so far he is unresponsive to treatment

I will be speaking with Wendy (Vet) again later.

What is really worrying is the way William (Leo's brother) is behaving. He's all on edge and keeps going up to him then dashing away and thumping.................

16-09-2009, 08:49 AM
Viola Rose and I are sending our spare vibes to leo. Do you think its actually a blockage?

16-09-2009, 11:52 AM
Christobel wants to operate on Leo.......................
She will call me ASAP

Bernie has had more acupuncture, Christobel says Bernie is responding and we need not give up on her yet.

Sorry for very brief update, I am a wreck

16-09-2009, 11:54 AM
I am so sorry Jane. Take comfort in that you have a fantastic vet who will do all she can for them both.

16-09-2009, 12:14 PM
Don't forget that I had a rabbit that survived a gut blockage op. a couple of years ago - and is still with us as happy (and chubby) as ever! Leo has just as good a chance - but I know its a difficult decision to make.

16-09-2009, 12:24 PM
Sending all the <<vibes>> in the world for a successful outcome for these two lovely bunnies. I can only imagine what you are going through xx

16-09-2009, 12:29 PM
Oh no Jane, what a worry for you. You know that Christobel would have made that decision because it gives Leo the best chance, and you know of course that he is in the best possible hands. Sending all the support I can muster xxx

16-09-2009, 12:57 PM
Thanks for all you support
I always said I'd never agree to GI surgery on a Bun again, having lost 5 in the past. But Christobel said that she really felt we should give Leo a chance.
I felt like if I said 'no' it would seem as though I just didn't think he was worth it.
I so hope I have done the right thing in agreeing to go ahead. Leo is 7.5 years of age, so not a young Bun. Its such a huge proceedure for anyBun to go through.

I feel so sick

16-09-2009, 01:33 PM
Loads and loads of vibes for you and the poorly bunnies. Keeping everything crossed for good outcomes.

16-09-2009, 03:12 PM
Leo is in surgery now......................

16-09-2009, 03:27 PM
Oh Jane I am so dreadfully sorry about Leo  You and your vet did the right thing. You were losing him anyway so it was worth a shot it really was....I'm so sorry that you lost him but please take comfort in the fact that he was a very lucky bun to have found you and to have been loved so much. It was sadly probably his time to go

I'm so sorry for your loss

Sending lots more vibes for brave old Bernie too xx

16-09-2009, 05:49 PM
Jane - I am so sorry you lost him

Please believe us all when we say that you did the right thing. I truely believe that most of us would have done what you did by giving him a chance.

You are an inspiration to us all and every single one of your precious bunnies knows just how much you love them.

Thinking of you and William. xxx

16-09-2009, 05:56 PM
Thank you everyone
I feel completely drained

Leo had numerous trichobezoar's, about 8. He had shown absolutely no sign of GI hypomotility in the days leading up to the acute bloat. He was not a Dental Bun. He ate tons and tons of hay and drank well. I groomed him and William regularly. I just dont understand how this has happened

Christobel managed to remove all the trichobezoars and emptied his stomach, which was full of gas and fluid. But his gut wall was so friable and Christobel just could not close it up and keep it 'water-tight'. She felt that post op' complications were just going to be so great (peritonitis, adhesions, stasis etc...) that it would not be in Leo's best interests to continue. I agreed and Leo was not woken from the GA

When I went to collect William he was in with Leo's little body and was grooming him  Eventually he moved away. I was then able to cuddle Leo and say goodbye

William is now home looking confused and very alone

I will post a tribute to Leo in Rainbow Bridge later

having been through the exact same thing just a few months back i totally understand how you feel but you did the right thing to try. my bunny got sick all of a sudden and like leo had no reason for this to happen. My vet told me i couldn't have done anything different to have prevented it and was just very unlucky. Leo had a long and happy life and was obviously very loved,
