Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Update on Rosie - Eye Problems

Rosie Rabbit

Mama Doe
Hi guys

Rosie has had a few problems recently and I could do with some advice and input from you all. At the end of June we noticed her right eye was quite bloodshot. She's blind in both eyes (cataracts) and sees a specialist eye vet periodically, so we took her back for a consultation. Basically, she has developed uveitis in her right eye and has been on Maxitrol eye drops ever since.

We suspected EC and did the whole Panacur / bleach and steam clean palaver for 4 weeks. Then she began to sound a bit chesty and her eyes started leaking and I wondered if a pasteurella-type infection was to blame (as I know pasteurella can cause uveitis as well). She had a couple of penicillin shots (Ultrapen LA) and seemed to be not too bad after that. She lost some weight as well but I think that was down to pain in the eye which wasn't being wholly relived by the Maxitrol drops. I asked for Metacam for her and she has been on it now for a couple of months. Her weight stabilised and she has been pretty much fine in herself - apart from one thing.

The problem is that her right eye is leaking terribly and I am having to bathe the fur on her face thoroughly a couple of times a day. The left eye (which doesn't have uveitis but has a cataract) is leaking a bit too. Last week, she went in to the vet for a GA and x-rays to her skull and chest (as she's still a bit 'grunty') and also had her tear ducts flushed. The chest x-ray showed a couple of darker patches near the front of her lungs, but the vet said this was just an ageing thing and wasn't too concerned. Luckily, there were no teeth problems, and the roots were elongated a bit, but according to the vet, not really enough to be causing all the wetness. There was a bit of gunge in the tear ducts but not much. The wetness is just the same and hasn't improved.

She's to go back on Tuesday and the vet thinks we'll have to make a decision about whether or not to have her right eye removed as the leaking is needing a lot of management. She thinks that because of the size of her eyeball (due to the uveitis?) the tears have nowhere to go but down her face. However, this wouldn't explain why the left eye leaks a bit, although I know that some buns just have leaky eyes. Her eye vet said the uveitis has stabilised, but I don't know how long the eyeball could be left in situ without causing problems, as I'm not sure if the Maxitrol eye drops can be used long-term without causing problems in themselves. She started on 4 drops a day for the first three weeks, and has been on 2 a day ever since.

Sorry for the long post, but I would really appreciated some input and advice.

I have a Bun with EC induced Uveitis and he has been on Maxitrol for almost 2 years.

Given Rosie's other problems (Respiratory tract) I personally would only opt for removal of an eye as a very last resort. Even then I'd have to think long and hard about it.

Lots of vibes for her :)

Thank you Jane. :)

I remember you saying before about your bun being on Maxitrol long-term. Rosie's still on 2 drops every day; I'm not sure how feasible that is long-term - I need to clarify that with the vet.

Is it because of the risks of the GA that you'd be reluctant to have the eye removed? It is a big risk I know, although she was very perky 24hrs after the one last week and has seemed to cope with it very well. Wouldn't like to have to give her another one too soon though.

Will have to weigh up the options and talk to the vet on Tuesday.

Aww, that's not so good. I'm sorry I don't have any experience with this type of thing but I just wanted to send some *vibes* Rosie's way.

oh hun im so sorry...shows how long ive been away:(:(

i was told by the vet dealing with berties corneal ulcers all those months that an eye removal really is the last resort in so many eye disease cases..one of the reasons being the ga yes...the stress and after effects too....but someitmes there are ways to get aorund it to the buns better health.

have you asked to be refferred to an exotics vet ..sorry im a bit behind....long time no visit:oops:
with bertie our vets tried everything then refferrred to us to a vet...he was so different as his knowledge in that area was so much more in depth etc. Quite a shock especially as our vet is pretty bunny savvy as are several others at the hospital.

i oculd be wrong and another vet still wont be able to help and the eye will have to be removed....but i guess with her lungs..itd be the ga at issue.

nosey rubs for rosie..hugs for you.....xxx

^^ Thanks Debs. I think that's good advice - we were at the vet again yesterday for Rosie's post-investigative check, and we're going to get referred to the Rabbit Clinic at the Royal D*ck Vet School in Edinburgh for a second opinion on what to do about the eye.

My vet is very good but she's not an exotics vet and admits that she isn't 100% sure whether or not the size of the eyeball is causing the wetness. She did seem a bit reluctant to remove the eye at this stage and said that eyes are only normally removed as a last resort - in other words if the pain can't be managed or if there's an abcess.

So rather than either doing nothing or removing the eye now, I think a consultation with specialists would maybe help us make a decision as to what would be the best course of action.

.

I agree :)
I think its so much more helpful when a Vet admits they dont know all the answers. It makes me trust them MORE :) My Vet will always say when she needs more experienced/specialist help in deciding on the best treatment for a particular Bun.

Good luck at The Royal 'Rude Word'.............

Nose rubs to little Rosie
