Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hi
one of my rabbits is an up eared rabbit. recently one of her ears has a tendency to flop down like a lop eared rabbit. it does this for a couple of days then goes back up for a few weeks, then the cycle repeats itself. she is quite old (7 years). there is no sign of head tilt. what do you think? is this normal or do you think she needs to see a vet? I would appreciate your opinions :)

Are they big ears? I don't think it would be anything to worry about, she probably had borderline lop ears and as she gets older some tissue just gets a bit weaker and it flops over. There are certainly other rabbits out there that have ears that are sometimes up and sometimes down.

Joey does this! As long as the ears look ok and shes acting normal i wouldnt worry, joey had a completely lopped ear for a couple of weeks last month and now its back up

Thanks very much for the replies, I can relax now :D she looks fine in every other way, just a bit strange with one ear up and one down

I personally would suggest getting him checked out. Severe ear mites can cause an ear to lop. I know a lady with a rabbit who has one ear lopped due to severe ear mites and it never came up again. He has L shapped ears, one out of right angles and one upright.

It may be nothing, but at 7, that's a really long time for 'loppyness' to start to show.

You lose nothing by getting it checked.

I agree with Sky-o, but hopefully it will turn out to be nothing. My April had uppy ears for 6 years, then one hot day they flopped and never went up properly again :?

would also say that at that age its worth getting it checked out. One of mine recently had this and he has a middle ear infection in that ear. I have also had other where a suddenly lopped ear means an underlying problem resulting in some depression or distress (in one case EC)
