  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Any ideas please.

Young Bun
Hi ,my mother in law some times looks after her next door rabbit, she just be in touch and asked us if we know why the poor thing is starting to loose its fur in big patchs, dont know much about the bun,but hes very shy and we dont think he gets much attention.any ideas please.

It depends what you mean by big patches- one of my rabbits- whos now 7- has ALWAYS lost huge chuncks of fur- shes not bald or has any missing, its like she grows too much fur and is constantly malting but in chunks- honestly if you saw her youd think she was neglected as it happens every day no matter how much shes groomed. Shes had tests and been treated for mites several times, the vets said as its always happened its nothing to worry about, but one vet who didn know its always been like that said stress can trigger a similar response. I think my bun has hormone issues, as it stopped growing a few months ago and now shes been spayed its started again!

If its only just started however, as biscuitblossom said, it could be fur mites. Or even a health conditon thats starting- ie teeth over growing. Id ask a vet, as anything sudden in rabbits isnt good!
