  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

We need some help - young bunny not well

Scooter

New Kit
I have been given a young dwarf bunny, male around 12-14 weeks old, he was taken to the vets this morning as he wasn't eating and has been lethergic for about 5 days, why it's taken so long to get him to a vet I don't know.

Anyway he's been given some rehydration stuff which I've mixed up and he's had 0.5mls 4 times this afternoon, he's not touched his hay but is drinking a little from the water bottle by himself.

I've given him a heat pad and his cage in indoors with me with a blanket over it for darkness and quietness.

Anything else I should / could be doing to make things a bit easier for this little man? I'm going to get Infacol asap........

Hope you get some replies from properly experienced people - I am not one of them!
Poor little fellow. :(
Not sure but I think he may like a bit of company if you can sit by him and be near him - he may be a bit freaked in darkness.
Sometimes a bowl of water rather than a bottle can be a bit easier too.
Is he pooing/weeing?
Hay in the litter tray may tempt him.
Good luck with your mission :)

Was he given a full exam? pain relief? sub-cut fulids and is the rehydration stuff a fluid rehydration or a critical care/recovery syringe food?

no droppings today......over night just a sticky slimy fluid from bottom, not nice - he is keen to take the rehydrate stuff and he's also managed some Infacol but he is cold and hardly moving.

I have him out every 2 hours and he's taking between 1 and 2mls of rehydrate stuff - the vets did not give him critical care and I don't have any

What about antibiotics? If he hasn't been given any then I would recommend trying another vet as the mucos is a sign of infection possibly ME

Edit you can mash pellets and water to make a substitute ctitical care but your vet must first rule out a blockage.

This bunny needs to go back the vet asap
