  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Ghostie has Snuffles / Pasteurella (U/D)

*Spider*

Wise Old Thumper
Please can I have as much info on it as possible.
I think Ghostie has it. She has a snotty nose/ a gunky eye and discharge from a nostril.
She is seeing Damian my rabbit savvy vet tomorrow at 4:30pm.

Folly and Wispa (bridge buns) both had snuffles/pasteurella but both lived to ripe old ages. Folly's snuffles never bothered her and she only ever had wet legs where she was always washing the snot off her nose. No other symptoms other that a slightly raspy sound to her breathing. However, when she was about 7 it turned to pnuemonia. This was cleared up with Zithromax but she suffered recurring bouts of it about every 4 months, each time progressively worse until she finally passed away aged eight and a half.

Wispa just had a slightly snotty nose and occasional raspy breathing but that was as bad as it ever got. They had both lived with other bunnies, none of which showed any symptoms.

That's about all I can tell you of my experience of snuffles/pasteurella.

Damian has confirmed that she did have snuffles. She had an injection of Metacam, Baytril and I've been given a course of Baytril and some Fucithalmic to use on her eye.

both bisc and matt have upper respiratory infections, although bisc had three months of antibiotics and is now ok.

matt is still on medication, nebuliser etc. you can see my other threads for all the info and treatment tried etc. he has done seven months now on meds but hopefully will be ok after another two months.
