  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Cuniculi or ear infection

New Kit
About 2 weeks ago my rabbit developed a head tilt, and poor sense of balance. (She already has cataracts she has had for 3 years.) We took her to our vet who checked her ears and saw no pus but just in case gave her a shot of Bicillin which he said was a strong dose that should last a week. We also put her on a course of albenzadole while we waited for the cuniculi blood test to come back (it was positive - vet says probably cause of the cataracts too).
The thing is, she got better after the first few days after the bicilin injection, but as it wore off she got worse again. The vet is going to give her another shot of it.. so my question is .. do you think this second injection will cure it? How long does it normally take? Anyone have any experience with it?

thanks

Just found your thread on another search and sorry that it has not been responded too.

Its good that you have run tests and seem to have a diagnosis and that a positive response was shown to the meds given. I dont think a one off injection of Penicillin will cure the problem and a longer regime of medication will be necessary. Are they treating the Ec with Panacur.

Hopefully my bumping this thread will elicit more experienced responses and recommendations for drug regime that you can discuss with your vet.

Hows your bun now, never seen this before now.
My boy had head tilt through EC, he recovered, but was still left with his tilted head.
Some buns get totally over EC and some remain having a squinty head, but manage fine.
