Parsnip's broken his leg *UPDATE* post 43

Mackers

Wise Old Thumper
:cry: It's broken right through the elbow joint and needs to be wired back together. My bunny savvy vet says he needs to speak to an orthopedic surgeon before he attempts to operate and may need to refer him to a specialist. Worst case scenario is amputation. How bad do I feel right now? This is ALL my fault for attempting to bond a trio:cry::cry:

And so much for the emergency 'on call' vet on Sunday morning who told me she thought it was just a sprain  (Note to self: always insist on an x-ray)

Thank you. I just feel so bad. None of this would have happened if I hadn't tried to give a home to another rabbit. I know hindsight is a wonderful thing but the guilt is awful. If they manage to wire the bone (and rabbit bones are very brittle apparently), he'll need confinment in a very small cage for at least three weeks. Obviously, Flora will have to stay with him - she'll be most put out!

Do you need a small indoor cage? I have a few spare here if you need to borrow one

When Bruse dislocated his hip he was confined for 6 weeks. Instead of Prudence staying with him full time I used to bring her in for 5 or 6 hours a day to sit with him in the cage. They still remained bonded during that time and it gave Bruce a chance to have some peace and quite to recover too :)

Bless you Liz - that's really kind but I think I'll be OK. I have my 48" dog crate that Pooh's in at the moment but I also have my puppy panels that I can make into another cage. Mum's currently using my 36" dog crate for her puppy but she'll bring that back to me if I need it. And I also have a 24" cage that he could stay in for the first couple of days after the op.

Oh no!!! poor Parsnip, sending loads of vibes for him!!!![the more I hear the more I'm freaking about my trio bond in 3 weeks time:(]

Don't panic! There's no reason why it shouldn't work - just because my trio clearly wasn't going to. It was a freak accident - he probably just landed awkwardly after his fisticuffs with Pooh and it possibly could have happened at any time such as jumping off a wall in the garden.

Exactly, listen to your own words and stop feeling guilty, this wasn't your fault! I wish him all the best and send lots of healing vibes. XxX

So sorry to hear this. My Parsley had a really bad break (broken two bones in three places in right hind leg) last year and was pinned back together in very very long op. Now you wouldn't even know - unless you x-rayed him!!! he still has a plate and 21 pins - some have been removed as they came loose.

We had it done at a specialist orthapaedics in Bedfordshire . . . they are a big referral place just to south of Silsoe. My own rabbit surgeon was on holiday (timing!!!) but might have referred anyway as Parsley also has heart problems and they have extra special monitors .

He wasn't confined that long to be honest.

Thanks for that - it's very reassuring information. At least Silsoe's not that far away from me if he has to go to a specialist. My vet said that it can't be plated and pinned due to the location of the break and the fact that the bones are so small but he's planning on doing some 'figure of 8' thingy with wire to hold the joint together and stop the ligaments from pulling the break apart when he flexes his leg. Keeping everything crossed for a successful outcome.

Oh dear, poor Parsnip :( Accidents happen in life, not your fault. I do hope he mends soon, lots of vibes for your little boy. :)

Poor Parsnip, hope it all works out ok, and as you said, probably just a freak accident. I've seen a "figure of 8 thingy" done (cant remember the proper name either) in a very young kitten, which have similarly brittle bones, and it was fine a few weeks later. Think its supposed to work beter than plates and pins as the forces are more like they would be with intact bone, whereas plates can actually prevent bones from fusing properly (i know, orthopaedics are well complicated!) so it should heal nicely all being well.

Simon's just phoned me back after speaking with the orthopedic surgeon and he's decided to refer Parsnip to the specialist. So it doesn't look like he'll be having his op tomorrow, unless they can fit him in as an 'emergency'. Clearly, the op is going to be more tricky than first thought and Simon was concerned that if things didn't go according to plan, he didn't have enough specialist orthopedic equipment to give Parsnip the best chance of recovery. So tomorrow we're off to Moulton College in Northants to see the specialist othopedic vet. Poor Mr Snips:cry:
