What it is about phosphorus that is bad for rabbits?

Bunny Buddy

Hi, sorry, I've done a search but can't find out.

On Artie's diet sheet it says avoid cereals, wheat, oat, barley etc as high phosphorus content .... but I don't know why.

I give him a little Herbs Plus which has these things in but otherwise avoid them, I'm wondering if it could have any adverse effect such as bloat/stasis episodes.

Thanks for any info.

I think it has something to do with a high phosphorous intake having a potential to effect renal function, especially in a Rabbit with a history of UT problems :?

Jane is there anything you dont know? Please could you photcopy your brain and post it to me, I would love to know half the stuff you do. :)

I am not saying I know for certain. Just what I think might be a reason why Artie is supposed to have a low phosphorous intake.
My mind is a mine of useless information

Thanks. That ties in with what I've been told, I just didn't know why. I know he's not on high phosphorous but will abstain totally of the Herbs Plus for a while, if that's what it takes. Good job he likes hay

Other high phosphorous foods to avoid for buns with stones/renal dysfunction are tomatoes, banana and carrots!

Oops
Thanks for that. He does get a small amount of carrot (limited because of sugar intake) but I've never given the tomatoes and nobody likes banana.

Carrot will be a very limited treat from now on
