  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Diarrhea??

Mackers

Wise Old Thumper
Just got back from work and been straight up to check and feed the buns only to find two or three 'splats' of poo in the shed. We're talking runny custard consistency here. Whipped Pea and Pod both off their feet and found that it's Pod with the runny bum. She's still quite clean but has obviously sat in one of the splats and had a bit on her tail and up the inside of one back leg. It's really quite watery poo, caramel in colour with the odd soft bit of poop in it.

Panic mode - first thought - flystrike. Gave her a good wash and did a thorough check for eggs but found nothing (Pea's fine too). She's normally bone dry and as clean as a whistle. She's eating normally and behaving normally. Could it be a sudden hot day that causes runny poo? I'll now have to check her every hour or two because for starters, she's now very damp and will attract flies and secondly, she could be unwell. I don't want to rush off to the vet because there are absolutely no other symptoms and my bunny specialist is a good half hours drive away.

Would it be worth Rearguarding her today just to be on the safe side? How long does it take for Rearguard to become 'active' or is it active as soon as it's applied? Does Advantage (or something similar) also kill fly eggs or maggots? Would it be worth bringing her indoors for the night where it's less likely she'll be bothered by flies?

Personally I'd bring her and Pea in for the night rather than put 'chemicals' on Pod.

I'd just feed them hay and water for the next 24 hours and give a probiotic too if you have some.
A few blackberry leaves would be good to feed Pod if you can locate any.

Thank you Jacks-Jane. I'm just about to set up my 48" dog crate for them both. Pod's just tucked into a couple of SS pellets and is behaving absolutely as normal (I just wanted to make sure she was eating happily). I'd rather not put chemicals on her if I can avoid it.

Hay, water and pro-biotic it is then. And them I'm off down the park to collect some blackberry leaves!!

Snowdrop has frequent bouts of diahorrea although hers are liquid that she passes amongst her poos. I usually clean her up and put her on hay only for at least 3 days keeping a close eye that she doesnt get dehydrated (especially in this heat).

Thanks for that info. Pod has done some large-ish pellets surrounded by thick liquid - just cleaned one up in the run. However, they're both indoors now, on rations of hay and water:lol:. I'm really hoping it's just the heat that's caused it but it's never happened before in hot weather. I'll be keeping a really close eye on her and I'm absolutely terrified of fly strike. She's still damp where I cleaned her but no more runny poops thankfully.
