Advice on Snowdrop please- update 18/8

Snowberry

Wise Old Thumper
Snowdrop suffers from bouts of diahorea and we are as yet to discover what is causing them. My vet wnated to refer her to a specialist in Bristol but she seemed to improve so we put it off. After a hay only diet for 2 weeks she seemed to be sorted so we reintroduced pellets and tiny amouts of other veg. She was fine for a month, the last 2 weeksa of which she was at my parents.

Well yesterday and today she has passed a large amount of fluid amonst some normal poos. I don't think food can be a trigger or it would have flared up before now.

I am not sure what to do. She is eating well and happy in herself so I am puttinng off GA and too much stress for her. Is ir fair for her to live like this or should I take her to Bristol (200 odd miles away) for more tests? I am going to speak tro my vet tomorrow but wanted to know what you would do.

Wow Bristol is a long way  Would it be worse travelling and stressing her for 4/5hrs (on the way and then again on the way home) if they don't have an answer? Are there no other closer places? Has your vet tried ringing this other vet, maybe they might have idea's over the phone?

Sorry I'm not much help :( Hope Snowdrop gets better quickly :D

My vet has just done a faecal test and general examination. On advice from the bristol specialist we have tried with diet but I don't feel like its that. He thought maybe some surgical adhesions as she does funny shaped poos anyway (large and rugby ball shaped)m he said the next step would be xray/ultrasound down in Bristol. I am going to discuss options with my vet today but I dedinarely won't have her opened up and I don't really think a car journey to bristol will do her any good.

Thanks jane, I wil mention this to the vet tonight. I will let you know what she suggests the next move is but I'm praying its not going to involve a GA.

Saw the vet today after yesterdays appointment was cancelled. She is at a loss as to what to do for the best. She has basically said she is happy to refer her to Bristol where she will have an ultrasound and bloods done but its up to me what I want to do.

She hasnt had any diahorrea today or yesterday and its just these random bouts that she has where she passes about 2 tablespoons of brown fluid. I have kept her on hay and pellets for now and it has stopped so I really dont understand what it could be.

Do people think I should take her to Bristol or leave her? She isnt in any discomfort, is eating well and a happy bunny.

Well if you take her to Bristol and they did an U/S which revealed a mass or some other abnormality would you then agree to them opening her up?
If not (which I would not do) I see no point in putting her through all the stress of a 200 mile journey.
It means you having to live with the 'not knowing' but if Snowdrop is happy and pain free then that's the main thing.

You could keep a diary noting when these episodes occur and also weigh her once a week to make sure she is maintaining her weight.

Sometimes for us 'doing nothing' is the hardest choice but it may be the best choice for the Bunny.

Good luck with whatever you decide :)

I am not sure what I would do. I dont want her opened up for investigation purposes but if she had a mass that needed removing I would have to think hard about it.

I have been keeping a note of what she is eating and when they occur but so far have had no luck finding a pattern. I also weigh her weekly and she went from 2.2kg down to 1.8kg but is now back at 2kg. I would hate her to have to go on hay only as she does lose weight on it.

I feel really bad as if it were Strawberry I would be saying go for it, but thats because I know he is a tough bunny, whereas Snowdrop gets stressed easily and is alot more delicate than him.

Is Bristol the only option? Are there no closer vet hospitals with the technology for the scans? (sorry I don't know much about the technical stuff  )

Has your vet tried consulting with Frances Harcourt Brown? And Harrogate is a lot closer than Bristol

Thats the one I was thinking of but couldn't remember  All I could remember was a Yorkshire based specialist :D Thank goodness someone on here has a braincell or two

My vet can do the ultrasound but isnt experienced in doing it on a conscious bunny and she wants a specialist to examine it.

I am not sure. I know she tried to contact quite a few specialists a while back and the only one she heard back from was Bristol.

Thats fair enough :) If you come down to Bristol and need somewhere to stay your more than welcome :D Would love to meet your gorgeous buns!

Thank you! If we do decide to take her at some point in the future that would be great as it is definately too far to travel there and back in a day!

Definatly! I'll be driving up to Yorkshire some time soon for my friends house-warming party, I'm not looking forward to the 4 hour drive

I drove to Cornwall the other week, took me 5 hours from here which was really good, Can take about 7 if there is traffic!

Just some thoughts, you never know, have you logged things like weather (temperature etc) and possible stress factors in you diary? Just wondering if they may hold a key, for instance I know Coccidia will multiply rapidly in a rabbit and in the environment in warm damp conditions.

I would definatly push for your vet to do some phoning round for ideas before you subject your bun to such a long journey.

Hope Snowdrop remains well.
