Harry the horror!

Snowberry

Wise Old Thumper
Its a good job me and Harry aren't bonding I guess since he isn't staying but he is an absolute horror! He makes the loudest grunting noises whenever I go near him, hates being handled and if sitting next to me on the sofa will bite me constantly really hard!

I guess its expected due to where he has come from. He was constantly pulled at and chased by small children so doesnt trust people at all at the minute.

Does anyone have any advice about how to try and improve his behaviour? I want to try and make him as sociable as possible to help him be rehomed easier but to be honest im finding it hard sitting with him as he just comes over and bites me!

Harry' not going to love me for this but he needs to be...snipped.:p

Tell me about it!!! I would love to be able to take him to be done before he goes off to a rescue but I just cant afford it at the minute. The vets near me want £80 to neuter a male!

Can you shop around.... prices usually vary greatly from one practice to another!

It really would help not only him, but also a rescue should they take him on. :)

The one I used for Strawberry is £45 but its 15 mile away and by the time pay day has come round I will be back at work so wont be able to get him there.

Things are a bit tight here at the minute so my OH really wouldnt be impressed with me spending even £45 on a bunny that wasnt ours (unless obviously he was ill and needed the vet treatment) when we are struggling to pay our bills.

I feel that one key to aggressive behaviour is not to be frightened or angry about it. An intact buck is often making a bid to rule the household - top buck! Harry hasn't had a good experience of people. I'd try a light hearted tone of voice - "Come on Harry we all know your a big boy now but you're a bunny not a lion!" etc. Some people make a EEEk noise to show it hurts.

I gave mine a toy rabbit for ahem... reckoning that frustration might contribute. Eventually succeeded by getting a submission from him when he misbehaved on the floor. Gentle increasing pressure over the forehead until chin touches the floor & hold it there for about 15 secs. I now have an intact buck & know that the 1 thing he WON'T do is bite.

Goodness knows how you wear thick clothes or gloves in this weather so you really can take a nip in your stride.

I was just going to say about talking to him. It may sound obvious but with Amber, who can be a stubborn, fiesty little so and so to pick up, it does work! Talk to him in an encouraging and stupid voice and he may well listen and relax

I have been talking to him and have him in our dining room which is open plan with kitchen so he is getting used to us being around. I will get him out on the sofa with me again tonight. I dont think he is doing it aggressively as he doesnt break the skin but is just nipping really hard!

I have done the eeek noise each time in reaction to how hard he has bit me! It really hurts!!!

panda was a little like that when he came. have you got any oven gloves? they are quite good for stroking and socialising nippy buns. don't forget to reward him if he doesn't nip you. i also tried distraction with a few pellets in you hand which you wave around. the bun is so intent on finding those pellets they forget to nip you.

Thanks I will try that. I think he will make a lovely bunny once he has been done and has been socialised a bit. I am not sure how he will get on with other bunnies though, after the damage he did to the other male he was living with he could be lethal!

hormones :) i will admit that pandas bond wasn't easy but he's now got 2 big buns to sit on him when he gets a bit big for his boots :)

I hope he will bond as I would hate the thought of him living on his own. I am sure the fighting was just because he was unneutered and living beneath two females so they were tempting him! lol

He is sat honking at me at the minute!
